How Old Is Pakistan?
79 years — and counting.
Pakistan was born on 14 August 1947 — so on 11 October 2026, it is 79 years, one month and 27 days old. Pakistan Day (23 March) marks the 1940 Lahore Resolution, not independence — Independence Day is 14 August. “Pakistan kab bana?” — 14 August 1947. “How many years since Pakistan was made?” — 79.
1933
Origin & the Old Name
Where “Pakistan” comes from.
The name was coined by Choudhry Rahmat Ali in his 1933 pamphlet “Now or Never”: Punjab, Afghania (the NWFP, now KP), Kashmir, Sindh, Balochistan — plus pak, “pure” in Persian/Urdu: the Land of the Pure. Pakistan had no old name — it was a new state carved from British India; the region was previously part of British India, and before that the Mughal, Sikh and various empires. “Biography of Pakistan”? The shortest: a 20th-century idea made a state.

Deep Roots
Ancient Roots
5,000 years before 1947.
The land is far older than the state: the Indus Valley Civilisation (Mohenjo-daro in Sindh, Harappa in Punjab — c. 2500 BCE) was among humanity’s first urban cultures. Then came the Gandhara Buddhist civilisation (Taxila, Takht-i-Bahi — UNESCO sites today), Alexander’s passage, and wave after wave of empires — Persian, Mauryan, Kushan, Ghaznavid, Delhi Sultanate, Mughal (Lahore’s golden age: Badshahi Mosque, Shalimar Gardens), Sikh, and British. Pakistan’s “empire” history is this layered inheritance.
1906–1947
The Pakistan Movement
The story of Pakistan.
The All-India Muslim League (1906) became the vehicle; Iqbal gave the vision (Allahabad, 1930); Jinnah gave the leadership — transforming from “ambassador of Hindu-Muslim unity” to the Quaid-e-Azam who won a separate homeland. The Lahore Resolution (23 March 1940) demanded independent Muslim states; the 1945–46 elections gave the League the Muslim mandate; and the 3 June Plan set the partition machinery in motion. 14 August 1947: the flag went up in Karachi — then the capital.
The cost was staggering: partition displaced some 15 million people and killed hundreds of thousands — the largest mass migration in human history. Pakistan inherited a moth-eaten state: a fraction of British India’s revenue, refugee camps instead of a civil service, and the Radcliffe Line drawn in weeks. That the state survived its first year is the movement’s true miracle.
23 March 1956
Becoming a Republic
When Pakistan became a republic.
“When did Pakistan become a republic?” — 23 March 1956, when the first constitution took effect and Pakistan became the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, with a president replacing the British monarch as head of state. (Same date as the Lahore Resolution — deliberately.) The 1956 constitution was abrogated in 1958; the 1962 constitution followed; the 1973 Constitution — suspended twice, amended 27 times — governs today.
The Arc
The Eras of Pakistan’s Government
Democracy and its interruptions.
Pakistan’s government history cycles: parliamentary beginnings (1947–58) → Ayub’s decade (1958–69) → Bhutto and the 1973 Constitution → Zia’s martial law (1977–88) → the democratic 1990s (Bhutto/Sharif alternation) → Musharraf (1999–2008) → unbroken democracy since 2008 — three consecutive civilian transfers of power, the 18th Amendment devolving power to provinces. The arc bends toward civilian rule — with the military’s shadow never far.
Milestones
Pakistan’s Historic Firsts
The “Pakistan first” file.
First Governor-General: Muhammad Ali Jinnah (1947) · First PM: Liaquat Ali Khan · First constitution: 1956 · First martial law: 1958 · First general elections (universal adult franchise): 1970 · First woman PM of the Muslim world: Benazir Bhutto (1988) · Nuclear tests: 28 May 1998 (Youm-e-Takbeer) · First peaceful civilian-to-civilian transfer: 2013. Each “first” is a chapter heading in the national story.
The Trauma
1971: The Year That Split the Story
The wound in the timeline.
No honest history skips 1971: the disputed 1970 election, the military crackdown in East Pakistan, the war with India, and the creation of Bangladesh on 16 December 1971. Pakistan lost half its population and its eastern wing. The lesson the state drew — never again — shaped everything after: the 1973 Constitution, the nuclear programme, and a nationalism built on survival. Understanding 1971 is understanding modern Pakistan.
For Students
Studying Pakistan’s History
A short history, in English.
For exams and essays — a short history of Pakistan: ancient Indus civilisation → Islamic arrivals (712) → Mughal golden age → British Raj → Muslim League (1906) → Lahore Resolution (1940) → independence (1947) → republic (1956) → wars and martial laws → 1973 Constitution → nuclear power (1998) → democratic era (2008–). The historical background in one line: a 5,000-year-old land with a 79-year-old state — the civilisation is ancient, the country is young.
