Lahore Smog Today: AQI, Causes & Protection

Lahore smog today — the latest AQI readings, what’s driving the haze, what the government is doing, and how to protect yourself.

Quick answer: Lahore’s AQI averaged ~147 on 9 October 2026 (Punjab EPA data) — unhealthy for sensitive groups — after peaking at 295 on 3 October. The dirtiest hours are 7–10am and after 7pm; cleanest 1–5pm. No rain is forecast for a week. Schools have been told to organise carpooling, and Punjab is expanding vehicle emissions testing.

This Week’s AQI: The Numbers

Lahore’s air has improved over the past week — but from a terrible base. Punjab EPA station data (via pakera.pk) shows Saturday 3 October was the bad day: a peak AQI of 295 at 9am, with 15 of 24 hours above 200 — full “unhealthy” band. Since then the city has eased: daily averages fell from 215 (Sat) to 147 (Fri 9 Oct), with Wednesday 7 October the cleanest day (average 145). Thursday morning briefly touched 201 again — a reminder not to read too much into one good week. The EPA’s own Lahore page says the city’s smog season runs October to February.

The daily pattern matters more than the average: Lahore’s air is dirtiest between 7am and 10am and again after 7pm — the commute and cooking hours — and cleanest in the early afternoon, roughly 1pm to 5pm. Plan walks, school runs and outdoor work around that pattern. On 9 October the pattern was textbook: AQI 134 at 5am, 165 by 9am, down to 130 at 4pm, climbing to 163 by 7pm. What’s Causing It

The EPA names the drivers: crop residue burning (peaking late October to mid-November, on both sides of the Punjab border), vehicle exhaust, factory smoke, brick kilns and construction dust. October’s cooler, stiller nights create temperature inversions — cold air near the ground traps everything the city emits. And nature isn’t helping: no meaningful rain is forecast for at least a week, leaving the air to be cleaned by policy alone. Pakistan’s baseline is grim — the 2025 World Air Quality Report ranked it the world’s most polluted country (PM2.5 67.3 µg/m³, ~14 times the WHO guideline), and on 7 October 2026 IQAir ranked Lahore among the world’s most polluted major cities. Earlier this month Lahore was also ranked among cities with “extremely poor” ground-level ozone pollution.

Government Action

Punjab EPA Director General Abdullah Niazi Sheikh has directed Lahore’s schools to make carpooling a formal part of the anti-smog strategy — school administrations are to arrange shared vehicles, by mutual consent, for families and staff from the same areas, since morning school-run traffic is a major pollution contributor. Separately, Punjab is expanding vehicle emissions testing as air quality worsens, with stricter checks and additional monitoring equipment — poorly maintained, smoke-emitting vehicles face greater scrutiny in the pre-smog enforcement campaign. Under CM Maryam Nawaz’s “Green Punjab” initiative, Lahore’s traffic police fleet is being electrified. The Lahore High Court has meanwhile warned that construction and vehicle smoke are worsening the city’s air. See also Lahore development projects.

Protecting Yourself

Check the AQI before going out. On days above 150: wear a KN95/FFP2 mask outdoors, keep windows closed, run an air purifier indoors, and limit outdoor exertion — children, the elderly and anyone with asthma or heart conditions most of all. Time exercise and errands for the 1–5pm window. If you drive, carpool — and get your vehicle’s emissions checked before the enforcement campaign finds you first.
