The Provinces
Provinces and Capitals on the Pakistan Map
Four provinces, one federal territory and two administrative territories — here is how Pakistan is divided, with capitals in Urdu and English.
| Unit | Urdu name | Capital | Area (km²) | Population (2023 census) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Azad Jammu and Kashmir | آزاد جموں و کشمیر | Muzaffarabad (مظفرآباد) | 13,297 | ≈4.0 million |
| Gilgit-Baltistan | گلگت بلتستان | Gilgit (گلگت) | 72,971 | ≈1.7 million |
Punjab is the most populous province and the country’s agricultural heartland — more than half of all Pakistanis live here. Sindh, home to the port city of Karachi, is the economic engine of the country. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa stretches along the Afghan border and is known for its mountains and historic passes. Balochistan is by far the largest province by area — about 44 per cent of Pakistan’s land — but the least densely populated, and rich in minerals and natural gas. The Islamabad Capital Territory holds the federal capital, while Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are administered as separate territories in the north. Area and population figures above are from the 2023 digital census as compiled by Wikipedia. Debate about carving new provinces out of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa surfaces regularly in national politics — read our guide to the new provinces debate to see what a future map of Pakistan might look like.
Neighbours
Borders and Neighbouring Countries
Pakistan shares land borders with four countries and a coastline with the Arabian Sea.
| Direction | Neighbour | What the map shows |
|---|---|---|
| East | India | The border runs along Punjab and Sindh; the Wagah-Attari crossing near Lahore is the main land route. |
| North-east | China | A short, mountainous border with Gilgit-Baltistan; the Khunjerab Pass is among the highest paved border crossings in the world. |
| West & north-west | Afghanistan | The long Durand Line frontier along Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan; Torkham and Chaman are the main crossings. |
| South-west | Iran | The border with Balochistan; the Taftan crossing links Quetta to Zahedan in Iran. |
| South | Arabian Sea | About 1,046 km of coastline along Sindh and Balochistan, with the major ports of Karachi and Gwadar. |
Pakistan’s position on the map — between South Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East — is the reason geography matters so much in its politics. The country sits at the crossroads of ancient trade routes: the Khyber Pass has carried traders and armies for centuries, and today the Gwadar port on the Balochistan coast is the centrepiece of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. On most printed maps you will also notice the disputed Kashmir region shaded in the north-east; Pakistan’s official maps show Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan as part of the country.
Administration
Districts, Divisions and Tehsils
Below the provinces, Pakistan is organised into divisions, districts, tehsils and union councils.
Pakistan has 173 districts (as of 2026), grouped into 37 divisions. Districts are the first tier of local government: each is run by a deputy commissioner and divided further into tehsils (sub-districts) and then union councils, the smallest administrative unit. The number keeps growing as provinces split large districts for better administration — Punjab alone now has 41 districts. The largest district in the country is Chagai in Balochistan (44,748 km²), while the smallest is Karachi Central. When you look at a detailed Pakistan map, the thin lines inside each province are these district boundaries. If you are preparing for competitive exams, learning the divisions of your own province first — then the districts within each division — is the fastest way to master the administrative map.
Province / Territory
7 top-level units: 4 provinces, the Islamabad Capital Territory, AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Division
37 divisions, each headed by a commissioner — an intermediate layer between province and district.
District (ضلع)
173 districts, each run by a deputy commissioner — the working unit of administration.
Tehsil & Union Council
Districts divide into tehsils, and tehsils into union councils at the grassroots.
Official Map
The Official Political Map of Pakistan (2020)
The map the Government of Pakistan itself uses — and the one featured on this page.
On 5 August 2020, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a new official political map of the country. It presents Pakistan’s stated position on its territory, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, and it is the map now used in government offices, textbooks and official publications. The image at the top of this guide is that very map, released into the public domain (CC0) via Wikimedia Commons — you are free to view, download and share it. Older maps you find online, especially those drawn by foreign publishers, often show the region differently, which is why students and journalists should always check which map they are looking at before quoting it. When in doubt, the 2020 official map is the reference that matches Pakistan’s own position. For classroom or office use, the map downloads cleanly at high resolution: print it at A3 size and provincial boundaries stay sharp, which is why teachers across Pakistan use this exact file for geography lessons. Because the file is public domain, you may also reuse it in presentations, videos and study notes without asking permission — just keep the Ministry of Foreign Affairs credit line so viewers know it is the official version.

اردو
Pakistan Map Vocabulary in Urdu

| ڈویژن | division | division |
| دارالحکومت | dar-ul-hukoomat | capital |

Rivers like دریائے سندھ (Darya-e-Sindh, the Indus) run south through the middle of the country into the بحیرہ عرب (Arabian Sea).
Landscape
Mountains, Rivers and Deserts on the Map
Pakistan’s physical map is as dramatic as its political one — the world’s highest peaks in the north, mighty rivers in the middle, desert in the east.
| Feature | Where on the map | Key fact |
|---|---|---|
| Karakoram Range | Gilgit-Baltistan (far north) | Home to K2 (8,611 m), the world’s second-highest mountain. |
| Western Himalayas | Azad Kashmir & northern KP | Nanga Parbat (8,126 m), the world’s ninth-highest peak. |
| Hindu Kush | Northern KP around Chitral | Tirich Mir (7,708 m) is the highest peak of the range. |
| Indus River (دریائے سندھ) | Flows south from Gilgit-Baltistan through Punjab and Sindh | About 3,180 km long — the lifeline of Pakistan’s agriculture. |
| Thar Desert | Eastern Sindh along the Indian border | One of the world’s largest subtropical deserts. |
| Balochistan Plateau | Western Balochistan | A vast arid plateau, rich in minerals, gas and coal. |
Five of the world’s fourteen 8,000-metre peaks stand wholly or partly in Pakistan — a fact that surprises many first-time visitors to the map. The great rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej) water the plains of Punjab and Sindh, which is why the east of the country is green farmland while the west fades into the dry Balochistan plateau. When students are asked to mark physical features on an outline map, the Indus, K2 and the Thar Desert are the three answers examiners look for most.
