Starlink is an innovative project designed by SpaceX to provide high-speed internet access to every part of the world via satellites in orbit. Starlink is a satellite internet constellation currently being deployed and operated by SpaceX, the aerospace manufacturer and space transportation company founded by Elon Musk.

Rather than using traditional ground infrastructure, such as fiber optics or cell towers, Starlink beams internet signals directly from one of thousands of small satellites orbiting the Earthto users.

These satellites operate at low Earth orbit (LEO), some 550 kilometres above the planet’s surface. This helps mitigate the latency (or delay) that has historically plagued regular satellite internet solutions.

Starlink’s proposition is straightforward and ambitious: deliver high-speed, reliable internet access to the world’s most distant and deprived communities.

In a rural village without a cable line, a mountain cabin off the grid, or perhaps even on a boat in the middle of the ocean, Starlink wants to keep you connected.

Global Coverage: Starlink is not limited by geography like terrestrial networks.

Very High Speeds: Users report 100–200 Mbps and up download speeds.

Lower Latency Starlink can deliver data too fast since it uses low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites instead of traditional service satellites.

How Does It Work?

Starlink customers are given a user terminal, also referred to as a “dish”,  that self-aligns with the satellite network overhead. Like other home internet systems, this dish connects to a Wi-Fi router. The main difference is that data is not traveling along buried cables but to and from space!

Who Is It For?

Rural and remote communities: This is not practical for fibre internet.

Travelers and Adventurers: For those who prefer the internet while on the go, Starlink has Starlink Roam.

Emergency Services: Starlink can be deployed in disaster areas to provide rapid communication.

What Does It Cost?

Starlink’s residential plan in the U.S. is about 120/month, plus a one-time equipment fee of about $599, as of early 2025. These prices can vary according to country and plan.
