Iskander Mirza — Pakistan’s last Governor-General (1955–56) — closed the viceregal office and opened the presidency, becoming the first President. Then he imposed the first martial law. The bridge figure with the darkest crossing.
Quick answer: Iskander Mirza was the last Governor-General of Pakistan (7 Aug 1955 – 23 Mar 1956). When the 1956 Constitution made Pakistan a republic, he became the 1st President — then abrogated the constitution and imposed martial law (Oct 1958), only to be exiled by Ayub Khan weeks later.

The GG Months
Mirza — a Sandhurst-trained former Indian Political Service officer, Pakistan’s first Defence Secretary — became GG in August 1955 as Ghulam Muhammad’s health failed. His seven months were transitional: shepherding the One Unit scheme and the 1956 Constitution to completion. On 23 March 1956, the republic was proclaimed — and the last Governor-General became the first President without leaving his chair.
The Presidency
As President (1956–58), Mirza played the old viceregal game with new pieces: four prime ministers in two years, dismissed at will. The 1956 Constitution’s parliamentary system never got to breathe — Mirza treated the presidency as the GG-ship with a new name.
The Martial Law
On 7 October 1958, Mirza abrogated the constitution, dissolved the assemblies and imposed martial law — with Ayub Khan as enforcer. Three weeks later, Ayub exiled Mirza to London. The man who closed the Governor-General’s office opened the era of military rule — and died in exile in London (1969), buried in Tehran. The presidency he founded: 1st President of Pakistan.
The Sandhurst Man
Mirza was the first Indian Muslim to graduate from Sandhurst (1920) — a King’s Commissioned Officer who served in the British Indian Army, then the Indian Political Service. He was Pakistan’s first Defence Secretary (1947), then Interior Minister, then GG. No Pakistani understood the machinery of power — army, bureaucracy, viceregal office — better. He used that understanding to dismantle democracy; Ayub used it to dismantle him. The insider who knew too much.
