Big News: Market Closing Hours Revised

Provincial governments across Pakistan have revised market closing hours as part of energy-saving measures and economic considerations. The latest decisions show a mixed approach, balancing business activity with electricity conservation.

In Punjab, authorities have decided not to enforce early closure at 8 PM. Instead, markets will remain open until 10 PM across the province. Officials reviewed the proposal but chose not to approve it. They believe traders are already facing economic pressure. Therefore, stricter market closing hours could have created more challenges for businesses.

However, the government has not ruled out future changes. Officials plan to continue discussions with traders on the markets’ closing hours. A final decision will come after proper consultation. At the same time, authorities have ordered the strict implementation of the austerity policy. They want all sectors to follow energy-saving guidelines.

Meanwhile, other provinces have taken stricter steps on market closing hours. In Balochistan, authorities have set earlier deadlines. Markets and shopping centers will close at 8 PM. However, essential services like pharmacies and tandoors will remain open. Officials have also directed that all events at wedding halls and hotels must end by 10 PM. Restaurants will follow the same closing schedule.

Similarly, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has introduced new market closing hours to reduce electricity usage. Markets in major divisional headquarters will close at 9 PM. In smaller districts, markets must shut by 8 PM. Restaurants, cafés, and event venues will end operations by 10 PM.

Despite these limits, authorities have allowed home delivery and takeaway services to continue after closing hours. This step supports businesses while maintaining restrictions.

The government has also expanded these rules to private offices, banks, academies, jewelry shops, and fitness centers. However, industrial and export units are exempt to avoid disruption in production.

In addition, officials have ordered a ban on unnecessary lighting. Decorative lights and illuminated building fronts must remain off. Authorities stress the need for careful electricity use across all commercial activities.

Local administrations will monitor compliance closely. Deputy Commissioners will ensure that market closing hours are followed at the district level.
