Second Monkeypox Case Reported in Karachi Raises Health Concerns

KARACHI: Health authorities have confirmed the second case of Monkeypox in Karachi this year, raising fresh concerns among residents.

This time, a 22-year-old man from the Buffer Zone area tested positive for the virus. Doctors say the patient is showing clear symptoms of the disease.

According to Dr Waheed Rajput, the patient has no recent travel history. This detail has caught attention because it suggests possible local transmission.

Right now, medical teams are treating the patient at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital. Doctors continue to monitor his condition closely.

Earlier this year, Karachi reported its first case in January. With this second case now confirmed, health officials are increasing surveillance across the city.

So, what exactly is monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a viral infection caused by the Mpox virus. Experts believe animals such as rodents and monkeys may carry the virus and pass it to humans.

Symptoms usually begin with fever. Soon after, a rash appears—often starting on the face before spreading across the body. The rash goes through several stages, including spots, blisters, and scabs.

Along with the rash, patients may experience headache, body aches, extreme tiredness, and swollen lymph nodes.

In most cases, symptoms appear within one to two weeks after exposure. The illness usually lasts between two to four weeks.

Health experts are now urging the public to stay alert. Early detection and timely medical care can help control the spread.

The latest case serves as a reminder that infectious diseases still pose risks, even without international travel.
