Beyond Staying Calm: What Sufi Day 2026 Revealed About Real Sufism

Sufi Day 2026 brought the world together online on Saturday, 17 October 2026, under the theme “Sufi Teachings: Peace, Tolerance and Brotherhood.” The international gathering ran from 4:00 to 6:00 PM Istanbul Time on YouTube Live. In addition, it wove together Quran recitation, Naat, an academic keynote, and live audience discussion.

The Sufi Day 2026 Organizing Committee put the event together. Its goal was to show how timeless Sufi teachings speak to modern life. Above all, its message was simple: peace in our hearts, tolerance in our relationships, and brotherhood in our humanity.

A global room, one message

The two-hour programme opened with the recitation of Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13) by Qari Aftab Sahab. The verse speaks of humanity’s shared origin and the duty to know one another across nations and tribes. Indeed, it framed the entire evening: honour lies in righteousness, not in background or status.

Mrs. Shaista’s Naat presentation followed, lending the gathering its devotional warmth. Then came the keynote by Bedia Küçükçalık, an academic and journalist with a PhD in Turkish-Islamic Literature from Istanbul University. In fact, she teaches Turkish Sufi literature at Üsküdar University’s Institute for Sufi Studies.

Pop mysticism vs the real path

The heart of the evening was her exploration of what authentic Sufism actually demands. Popular mysticism, she argued, is often reduced to staying calm, appearing tolerant, and feeding the ego with spirituality. Authentic Sufism, in contrast, requires harsh self-discipline, control of the ego, and the courage to speak truth against injustice.

In other words, real spirituality is not a peaceful appearance but an ethical discipline. The discussion drew a clear line between comfort-zone mysticism and a path rooted in divine principles. Meanwhile, Raazia Sanam — a Türkiye-based therapist and education consultant — moderated the session and guided the interactive Q&A.

An absence felt, a programme that endured

The programme had planned a second featured speaker: Reşat Nuri Erol, the writer, columnist, and Chairman of İslam Medeniyeti Vakfı. He could not join after the tragic loss of two lives in a road accident, compounded by heavy rainfall in Istanbul. The organizing committee extended its sincere condolences. Nevertheless, the programme continued with its planned focus intact.

The audience spoke back

Viewers did not just watch — they took part. The YouTube Live broadcast recorded 38 chat messages and 174 reactions, 212 interactions in all. For example, questions ranged from the difference between honour and arrogance in Sufism to requests for the speaker’s contact. Meanwhile, greetings poured in from Karachi to Türkiye.

Others simply thanked Dr. Bedia and the organizers. As a result, the evening felt like a conversation rather than a broadcast. The organizers noted that these figures capture recorded engagement, not total viewership.
