Quick answer: Pakistan’s e-passport is a biometric, chip-embedded passport issued by the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports (DGIP), available at all field offices since August 2023. A 36-page, 5-year e-passport costs Rs 9,000 (normal) or Rs 15,000 (urgent) in 2026. You can renew online at onlinemrp.dgip.gov.pk, pay via the Passport Fee Asaan app, and track your application by SMS to 9988.

The e-passport carries an embedded biometric chip holding your photograph and fingerprints, meeting ICAO standards. That means faster immigration through e-gates at major international airports and smoother visa processing. Old machine-readable passports (MRPs) remain valid until their printed expiry date — you do not have to switch early.
