How to Extend Your Laptop Battery Life on Windows and Mac

Your laptop battery drains fast mostly because of settings, not the battery itself. These proven tweaks add real hours on both Windows and Mac. Start with the biggest levers first.

Switch to the Right Power Mode

On Windows 11, open Settings, then System, then Power and Battery. Change Power Mode to Best Power Efficiency. This limits how aggressively the processor boosts and trims background activity.

For email, documents, and browsing, the difference is barely noticeable. The battery gain, however, is substantial. In addition, Windows suggests more savings under Energy Recommendations on the same screen.

On Mac, open System Settings, then Battery, and set Low Power Mode to Only on Battery. This slows background syncs and eases processor speed. Apple Silicon Macs gain roughly an extra hour from this alone.

Raise the battery saver threshold too. On Windows, the saver kicks in at 20 percent by default. Set it to start at 30 or 40 percent instead. Prevention beats rescue every time.

Kill Silent Background Drainers

The biggest battery thieves run in the background. They sync files, check updates, and index content nobody asked for. As a result, your laptop works hard while you read one page.

On Windows, go to Settings, then Apps, then Installed Apps. Click the three dots on any app and open Advanced Options. Set “Let this app run in the background” to Never for apps that do not need it.

On Mac, open Activity Monitor and sort by Energy Impact. Quit or remove whatever sits at the top for no good reason. For example, a chat app and a cloud backup client often burn power silently.

Turn off Bluetooth and unplug unused USB devices when traveling. Meanwhile, lower your screen brightness one or two notches. The display is usually the single largest power draw.

Protect the Battery for the Long Term

Keep daily charge between 20 and 80 percent. Batteries age fastest when held at 100 percent for hours. Many laptops offer a charge limit in the manufacturer’s utility or battery settings.

On Mac, turn on Optimized Charging under Battery settings. The system delays the final top-off until close to your usual unplug time. On Windows, look for Battery Conservation or Battery Health modes.

Heat ages batteries even faster than full charges. Charge on a hard surface with clear vents. Never charge inside a bag or under a pillow.

Finally, keep Windows, macOS, and drivers updated. Updates often include power management fixes. Indeed, a single patch can fix a background process that was draining your battery for weeks.
