An electric vehicle owner says a rooftop solar charging system has supplied all of his vehicle charging for the past two weeks, adding around 15 to 20 miles of range per day without ever plugging into the grid.
The owner demonstrated the GoSun EV Solar Charger at a farmers’ market in Montgomery while appearing with the New Jersey Electric Vehicle Association, showing how the system performs in real-world use rather than in a laboratory.
Peak Output Close to the Rated Figure
The system is rated for a maximum output of 1,100W. In testing so far, the highest output recorded has been around 1,054W, putting real-world peak performance close to the manufacturer’s advertised figure.
GoSun says the system can add up to 20 miles of EV range per day under suitable conditions, and the owner’s two-week experience lines up with that claim: the system covered all of his charging needs while providing roughly 15 to 20 miles of additional driving range each day.
How the Panels Fold Away
The solar panels fold into a compact enclosure mounted on the vehicle’s roof when they are not needed at full size. When the vehicle is parked, the panels can be unfolded to create a much larger solar array.
Interestingly, the owner found that the system continues generating power even while folded inside the rooftop enclosure. That means it can charge the included power station while the vehicle is being driven. GoSun says the system can produce around 200W continuously when closed.
The charger does not feed the fluctuating solar output directly into the vehicle. Instead, GoSun uses a 2,400Wh lithium iron phosphate battery to store energy from the panels, and an inverter then supplies power for standard Level 1 EV charging.
The system is designed to remain mounted on the vehicle’s roof and works with compatible roof crossbars. GoSun lists the EV Solar Charger at $3,999.
Why This Idea Fits Pakistan
For Pakistan, the concept has obvious appeal. The country gets strong sunshine for most of the year, and rooftop solar has already seen explosive growth among homes, shops and tube wells as electricity prices rose. Extending the same logic to vehicles is a natural next step.
Electric vehicle adoption in Pakistan is still early, but interest is clearly rising: Punjab’s Green Credit Programme drew 164,000 registrations, and Chinese firms signed 34 agreements in Shanghai this week covering electric vehicles and solar power.
For a commuter with a short daily drive and a car parked in the open, a roof-mounted solar charger could cover a meaningful share of charging without touching the grid. At $3,999, it is not cheap yet, but as with all solar hardware, prices tend to fall as manufacturing scales.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much range does the GoSun EV Solar Charger add?
The owner reports 15 to 20 miles of range per day, and the manufacturer claims up to 20 miles per day under suitable conditions.
Does it work while driving?
Partially. When folded, the system produces about 200W continuously, charging its internal battery while the car is in motion. Full output comes when the panels are unfolded and the car is parked.
How much does it cost?
GoSun lists the EV Solar Charger at $3,999.
Can any electric vehicle use it?
It works with compatible roof crossbars and supplies Level 1 charging through its inverter, so it is suitable for EVs that can accept standard slow charging.
