# JazzWorld and PTA host cybersecurity seminar on 5G, e-SIM and AI threats

JazzWorld, described as Pakistan’s leading digital platform company, organised a cybersecurity awareness seminar on Thursday in collaboration with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), bringing industry and government stakeholders together to examine emerging cyber threats and discuss measures to safeguard mobile networks, digital services and critical infrastructure.

The seminar examined how three fast-moving technologies are reshaping network security and consumer protection in Pakistan: 5G deployment, embedded SIMs (e-SIMs), and artificial intelligence. Participants from telecom operators, regulators and technology partners discussed what each development demands from operators and from users.

5G security: segmentation, firewalls and access controls

On 5G, the discussion focused on the technical safeguards that operators need as the new networks roll out. Security measures such as network segmentation, access controls, firewalls and secure interfaces were identified as essential tools for cutting vulnerabilities in 5G infrastructure.

The session reflected a wider concern in Pakistan’s telecom sector about the pace of the 5G rollout. As covered by Feature Pakistan, there has been debate about whether the country is moving toward 5G before the security and readiness groundwork is fully in place. The seminar’s emphasis on layered defences suggests the industry is now treating 5G security as a first-order problem rather than an afterthought.

e-SIMs: stronger onboarding and identity verification

On e-SIMs, the seminar stressed the need for robust digital onboarding, reliable identity verification, and stronger safeguards against SIM-related fraud and social engineering. Participants highlighted the importance of protecting personal information and preventing identity-based fraud as more subscribers move from physical SIMs to embedded ones.

The e-SIM discussion connects directly with regulatory action already under way. The PTA has introduced fee and registration rules for e-SIMs, and it has previously issued advisories urging mobile users to guard against fraud, covered here. The seminar’s message builds on that: as SIMs go digital, criminals are shifting their tactics too, and onboarding processes have to be strong enough to keep them out.

AI: a powerful tool for both defenders and attackers

On artificial intelligence, the seminar laid out the dual role of the technology. AI tools improve threat detection and response, allowing operators to spot attacks faster and react before damage spreads. At the same time, AI can be exploited to build more sophisticated attacks, from convincing phishing messages to automated social engineering.

The speakers called for combining technological safeguards with employee awareness, responsible AI use and stronger organisational readiness. In other words, firewalls alone are not enough; the people running and using the systems need to understand what they are up against.

“Cybersecurity is fundamental to building trust”

Syed Zaheer Mehdi, Group Chief Corporate and Regulatory Affairs at JazzWorld, framed the event in terms of public trust:

“Cybersecurity is fundamental to building trust in Pakistan’s digital future. As digital services become an increasingly important part of everyday life, protecting users, data and critical infrastructure require constant vigilance and collective action. At JazzWorld, we are committed to strengthening digital security through resilient infrastructure, advanced capabilities and close collaboration with regulators and industry partners.”

The event underlined that sustained cooperation among telecom operators, regulators and technology partners is now seen as the only workable path to digital resilience.

A day of coordinated warnings on digital safety

The seminar did not arrive in isolation. On the same day, the National Cyber Emergency Response Team (NCERT) and the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) issued a joint advisory warning Pakistanis against posting family photos, routines and locations on social media, saying such posts expose households to security risks.

Read together, the two developments form a clear pattern. The JazzWorld-PTA seminar addressed the supply side of cybercrime: how criminals exploit weak onboarding, social engineering and new technologies such as e-SIMs and AI. The NCERT-NTC advisory addressed the demand side: how ordinary families hand criminals the raw material through oversharing on social media.

NCERT’s profile has been rising in this space. It recently partnered with the Higher Education Commission on university cybersecurity training, and the federal government is establishing a dedicated federal CERT. The PTA, for its part, recently scrapped the one-year limit on telecom service reviews, signalling a regulator that is adjusting its rules as the digital landscape shifts.

For Pakistani users, the day’s message is consistent from both government and industry: the threats are getting smarter, and the first line of defence is still the care people take with their own information.
