Merseyside Police made 10 arrests after crowd trouble followed Manchester City’s 3-0 win at Liverpool on Sunday. The force gave the details on Monday, 12 October. One officer suffered a serious facial injury while making an arrest on Anfield Road after the match.
The officer was taken to hospital for treatment. He was later able to recover at home, police said. The arrests covered a range of alleged offences inside and outside the ground.
What police said about the arrests
According to the police statement, the 10 arrests included a man suspected of two offences of assaulting a constable. Five people were held on suspicion of tragedy chanting. One person was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly, and of assault.
Two more people were held for affray. Another was suspected of throwing items onto the pitch.
Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin said officers and stewards work to protect the public. She said it was extremely disappointing that an officer had sustained a serious injury while carrying out that duty.
A hostile backdrop to the match
Sunday’s game was City’s first since an independent commission found the club guilty of 114 breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules. City deny wrongdoing, and we reported their response in City’s appeal against the guilty verdict.
Liverpool supporters booed the City team announcement loudly before kick-off. Chants from the home crowd referred to a possible relegation punishment, if sanctions are later imposed. Manager Enzo Maresca had backed his club before the game, as covered in Maresca’s defence of City ahead of the Liverpool clash.
No sanction has been announced yet. Even so, the atmosphere at Anfield was tense from the start.
How City won the game
On the pitch, City stood firm against early Liverpool pressure. The game then turned in the 62nd minute, when Ryan Gravenberch was sent off. He received a second yellow card for a foul on Jeremy Doku.
Erling Haaland opened the scoring three minutes later. Doku worked the ball into the box, and his deflected effort fell to the Norwegian, who drove a left-footed shot past Alisson Becker.
Doku scored the second himself in the 68th minute. He curled a fine long-range shot into the far top corner. Rayan Cherki completed the scoring in the 78th minute, finishing a move he had started with Josko Gvardiol.
Liverpool had gone into the match short of options. As we reported before kick-off, Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo missed the City clash through injury. This was Liverpool’s first league defeat of the season, and it leaves them ninth in the table.
City stay clear at the top
The win kept City’s perfect start intact. They have six wins from six matches and sit on 18 points. They are three points clear of Arsenal, who came back to beat Leeds on Saturday.
Haaland said afterwards that the team had to stay strong mentally. He said the players could only control their football and their fight as a group.
For City, the football answer was emphatic. The events after the final whistle, however, mean the match will also be remembered for the arrests and the injured officer.
