Bangladesh tightened their grip on the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi on Monday, the fourth day of the match. Litton Das scored a century as the visitors declared their second innings at 372 for seven, setting Afghanistan a target of 479 runs.
Afghanistan then reached 132 for three at stumps. They still need 347 more runs on the final day, with seven wickets in hand. Bangladesh, in contrast, need those seven wickets to complete a commanding win.
Litton leads the declaration push
Litton made 102 from 117 balls, with 14 fours. It was his second major contribution of the match, after his half-century in the first innings. We covered that opening day in Bangladesh’s 317 for eight on day one in Abu Dhabi.
He was not alone in the second innings. Najmul Hossain Shanto made 82, and Mushfiqur Rahim scored 81. Their stand of 159 runs rebuilt the innings after three early wickets fell for 53.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz then finished unbeaten on 52. Once the lead grew close to 480, Bangladesh declared and put Afghanistan straight back in to bat.
How Bangladesh built their lead
The match position rests on the first innings. Bangladesh made 346 batting first, and Afghanistan replied with 240. That gave the visitors a lead of 106 runs before they batted again.
Rahmat Shah held the Afghan reply together with an unbeaten 105. Around him, though, the innings fell away quickly. Afghanistan lost their last six wickets for just 21 runs.
Hasan Mahmud did most of that damage. He took five wickets, including the hat-trick we reported in Hasan Mahmud becoming the first Bangladesh pacer to take a Test hat-trick. Ebadot Hossain supported him with four wickets.
Afghanistan’s final-day task
Rahmat again top-scored in the chase, making 51 from 124 balls. Ebadot dismissed him late in the day, claiming his second wicket of the innings. Hasan Mahmud took the other wicket, removing Shahidullah for 19.
Sediqullah Atal will resume on 35 not out. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi is with him on 19 not out. The pair must bat for most of Tuesday if Afghanistan are to save the match.
There is also a Pakistani presence in the middle. Ahsan Raza is one of the on-field umpires for this Test, while Asif Yaqoob is the television umpire. The match has drawn attention in Pakistan for another reason too, as Ramiz Raja joined the commentary panel for the Abu Dhabi Test.
The final day begins on Tuesday, 13 October. Bangladesh start it as clear favourites, but Afghanistan have already shown fight once in this match through Rahmat. A long first session without a wicket would keep the contest alive.
