The government cut the petrol price in Pakistan by Rs2.93 per litre on Monday night. Petrol will now retail at Rs395.37 per litre for October 13. High-speed diesel moved the other way, rising by 61 paisas to Rs396.85 per litre.
The Petroleum Division issued the notification late on Monday. It said the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) had revised the ex-depot prices of petroleum products for October 13, 2026. The new rates replace the prices set on October 9, which had held through the weekend.
| Product | Price on October 10-12 | Price on October 13 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol | Rs398.30 per litre | Rs395.37 per litre | -Rs2.93 |
| High-speed diesel | Rs396.24 per litre | Rs396.85 per litre | +Rs0.61 |
Petrol price in Pakistan under daily revisions
Pakistan now sets fuel prices daily, from Monday to Friday. The system follows movements in international oil markets. Before this change, the government revised rates every week, and before that every fortnight.
The daily system began on July 21, after renewed fighting in the Middle East pushed oil prices higher. Since then, the changes have been frequent in both directions. According to figures reported this week, petrol has been raised 35 times and cut 22 times since daily revisions began. Diesel has risen 34 times and fallen 23 times over the same period.
That churn is the backdrop to this cut. Earlier this month, our reporting on petrol rising by nearly Rs145 a litre during 2026 traced how the daily mechanism has kept pump prices near record levels. Even after Monday’s reduction, petrol costs far more than it did at the start of the year. Both fuels also remain well below their April 3 peaks, when petrol touched Rs458.41 and diesel Rs520.35 per litre.
Why prices stay high despite small cuts
Global oil markets explain much of the pressure. Brent crude has stayed above $100 a barrel as the regional conflict disrupts energy supplies. This week, Houthi strikes on Saudi airports and energy facilities added fresh risk. Saudi Arabia has extended the closure of Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport while it completes safety checks, and Pakistan’s petroleum minister was in Riyadh for talks on wider energy supplies, including Libyan crude.
Domestic taxes and levies form the second layer. Official figures reported this week put petroleum levy collections at about Rs1.205 trillion between July 2025 and March 2026. The government’s collection target for 2026-27 stands at Rs1.676 trillion. Because levies sit inside the retail price, a fall in global rates does not pass to consumers in full.
Markets are watching the same risks. The Pakistan Stock Exchange fell 1,964 points on Monday as the emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and regional tensions unsettled investors. Fuel costs feed directly into transport fares and food prices, so each daily revision carries weight beyond the pump.
For households, Tuesday’s change is modest. A rider filling a 10-litre motorcycle tank will pay about Rs29 less for petrol. A truck operator buying 200 litres of diesel, in contrast, will pay about Rs122 more. The next revision is due on Tuesday night, for Wednesday’s prices.
