Petrol Price & Inflation in Pakistan: Rs 398/Litre and the Fuel Chain (2026)
No price moves Pakistan’s inflation like petrol. From Rs 266 in March to Rs 458 in April 2026, then back to Rs 398 today — fuel’s wild ride explains half the inflation story. This guide tracks the petrol price, the daily pricing mechanism, and how fuel feeds every other price.
Quick answer: Petrol costs Rs 398.30/litre (10–12 Oct 2026), diesel Rs 396.24 — set daily by OGRA since 17 July 2026. Petrol peaked at Rs 458.41 on 3 April 2026 after the Hormuz closure; it began the year near Rs 266. Motor fuel is 37.7% dearer YoY (PBS).
Today’s price
For 10–12 October 2026: petrol Rs 398.30/litre (down Rs 0.66), high-speed diesel Rs 396.24 (up Rs 0.52) — notified by the Petroleum Division on OGRA’s recommendation. Prices are uniform nationwide. Check the latest revision before assuming — under daily pricing, rates move constantly.
The daily pricing mechanism
Pakistan revised fuel fortnightly until early 2026, then weekly after the Middle East conflict began, and since 17 July 2026 — announced by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik — daily. OGRA sets ex-depot prices from a seven-working-day rolling average of Gulf prices plus freight, premium, taxes, levies and margins. The lag means pump prices trail world markets by days, in both directions.
2026’s wild ride
Petrol started March near Rs 266. Then, on 28 February 2026, Israel and the US attacked Iran and Tehran shut the Strait of Hormuz — the conduit for a fifth of global energy. Gulf petrol prices surged; Pakistan’s pump price climbed almost daily to Rs 458.41 on 3 April (diesel Rs 520.35). As pressures eased and the mechanism adjusted, prices retreated through mid-year to today’s ~Rs 398 — still roughly Rs 130 above March.
How fuel feeds inflation
Direct: motor fuel has a 6.7% CPI weight (only 1.47% for the poorest quintile — the rich, who drive more, feel it most directly). Indirect: diesel powers trucks, tractors, tube-wells and generators — so fuel lifts food, freight and factory costs. September’s CPI jump was led by motor fuel +10.8% in the month. When petrol moves, everything follows — with a lag of weeks. That’s why fuel tops the causes list.
