KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange closed lower on Monday as the PSX dips 454 points, with investors selling shares across banks, cement makers and oil companies and the benchmark KSE-100 index settling at 165,966.09.

The session opened on a weak note. By 9:38 am the index had slipped to 166,120.90, down 298.81 points. It then clawed back to an intra-day high of 166,698.46, but the recovery proved short-lived. Heavy selling in the second half pushed the benchmark to a low of 165,918.35 before it closed 453.63 points, or 0.27 per cent, lower for the day.

Selling hit automobile assemblers, cement producers, commercial banks, oil and gas exploration companies and oil marketing companies. With no fresh positive triggers, investors stayed cautious through the session.

Banks, cement lead as the PSX dips 454 points

Brokerage KTrade Securities said the index fell amid fragile investor sentiment. Activity on the KSE-100 stayed thin at 109 million shares. Trading concentrated in Pakistan Refinery, Cnergyico, TPL Trakker, WorldCall Telecom and Saif Power. Selective buying in MCB Bank, Attock Refinery, Pakistan Oilfields, TRG Pakistan and Bank Alfalah provided partial support.

Sectoral weakness was broad-based. Commercial banks, cement firms, investment banks and technology companies led the decline, with United Bank, Systems Limited, Fauji Fertiliser and Hub Power among the biggest drags.

The cautious tone matches the wider economic picture. Pakistan’s growth slowed to 2 per cent in the final quarter of the last fiscal year as industry contracted 4.7 per cent, according to the National Accounts Committee. Read: Pakistan Q4 Growth Slows to 2% as Industry Contracts

Oil above $100 keeps pressure on

Brent crude stayed above $100 a barrel, keeping macroeconomic uncertainty alive. Costlier oil pushes up Pakistan’s import bill and feeds inflation, which typically weighs on equities.

The energy cost squeeze comes as the government moves to overhaul gas pricing. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired a review on Monday where a phased deregulation roadmap was finalised for the prime minister, targeting circular debt and cross-subsidies. KTrade expects the market to remain cautious and range-bound. It said near-term direction hinges on global oil prices, geopolitical developments and corporate earnings. A sustained recovery in trading volumes is critical for a durable rally, the brokerage added.

Ali Najib, deputy head of trading at Arif Habib Limited, said the market opened on a negative note and touched the day’s low of 165,918 before recovering to 166,698. Selling pressure in the afternoon erased the gains and dragged the index back toward its low by the close, he said. He expects the index to stay volatile between 164,000 and 168,000. On the corporate front, Engro Fertilisers reported a net profit of Rs9.1 billion for the third quarter of calendar year 2026, up 57 per cent year on year. Earnings per share came in at Rs6.83, supported by strong fertiliser offtake.

The company announced a cash dividend of Rs5.50 per share, up from Rs4.50 in the same quarter last year. The payout implies an 80 per cent payout ratio, which the company linked to a cautious approach to capital allocation.

Fuel price cut offers some relief

The market weakness came on the same night the government cut fuel prices sharply. Petrol fell Rs5.16 per litre to Rs381.14 and high-speed diesel dropped Rs7.69 to Rs389.27 for 24 hours under the daily price mechanism. It was the biggest single-day fuel price cut since August.
