Petrol Price Cut by Rs5.16, Diesel by Rs7.69 from October 20

The government has cut the petrol price in Pakistan by Rs5.16 per litre and the price of high-speed diesel by Rs7.69 per litre. The new rates take effect on Tuesday, October 20, according to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division.

Following the revision, petrol will retail at Rs381.14 per litre, while high-speed diesel will cost Rs389.27 per litre. The government continues to levy Rs114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel, so nearly a third of what motorists pay at the pump goes straight to the exchequer.

Daily pricing is now the new normal

This cut is the latest move under the daily fuel pricing system. On July 17, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced that the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) would fix fuel prices every day, based on international market trends. The step followed renewed hostilities between Iran and the United States, which sent oil markets swinging.

Before that decision, the government had been announcing weekly revisions since early March, alongside conservation measures meant to guard against supply disruptions from the Middle East conflict. For consumers, daily pricing means pump rates can now shift more often, in smaller steps, instead of jumping sharply every fortnight. Readers can see how the daily pricing mechanism works for LPG as well, and how Ogra is cracking down on hoarding ahead of winter.

Our record: prices have fallen steadily since October 1

Feature Pakistan’s own reporting gives the longer picture. On October 1, we recorded petrol at Rs387.40 per litre and diesel at Rs400.35. Daily revisions since then had already brought both fuels down to Rs386.30 and Rs396.96 before Monday’s cut, which takes them to Rs381.14 and Rs389.27.

The broader trend is a long way down from the peaks of April 3, when diesel hit Rs520.35 and petrol reached Rs458.41 per litre. Both fuels began climbing in late February and early March after the US-Iran war broke out, with diesel rising from Rs281 and petrol from Rs266 per litre. The retreat since April has been gradual but steady.

What the cut means for households

Petrol is used mainly in private transport, small vehicles, rickshaws and two-wheelers, so this cut lands directly on the middle and lower-middle classes. Diesel matters even more broadly: it powers heavy transport, and freight costs feed into the price of almost every good on the shelf.

The government has paired the price relief with austerity steps. Markets must now close by 9pm, and fuel allocations for official vehicles have been cut by 50 per cent for three months. On September 13, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also announced a relief scheme for users of motorcycles, autos and vehicles of up to 800cc to soften the burden of fuel costs. Energy costs remain a pressure point across the economy, as seen in the dispute over K-Electric’s share of circular debt.
