WhatsApp Guest Calls Let Anyone Join a Call With No Account

KARACHI: WhatsApp is rolling out guest calls, a feature that lets people join a WhatsApp call even if they do not have an account. Guests can join directly from a web browser without downloading the app or creating an account, and WhatsApp says the calls are free, have no time limit and remain end-to-end encrypted.

The change is a significant break from WhatsApp’s account-first identity model. For the first time, participation in a call does not require a phone number or a WhatsApp profile.

How WhatsApp guest calls work

Only users with a WhatsApp account can create a call link. From the Calls tab, the host taps the “+” button and creates a link, which can then be shared with anyone.

A guest opens the link in a browser, enters their name and lands in a waiting room. The host must manually approve every guest before they can enter the call. Guest calls support both one-to-one and group calls with up to 32 participants.

Guests get most calling features. They can share their screen, react with emojis and raise their hand during a call. But there are limits: guests cannot see other participants’ phone numbers, send messages during the call or invite additional people. The host can remove guests at any time or end the call for everyone.

Calls stay end-to-end encrypted

WhatsApp says guest calls remain protected with end-to-end encryption. The web client creates a unique identifier used to encrypt the call, allowing guests to take part without a regular WhatsApp account.

The waiting-room design also answers the obvious abuse question. Because the host approves every guest by name, random strangers cannot crash a call from a leaked link. Combined with hidden phone numbers, the system keeps the social distance that a no-account feature needs to be safe.

Calendar integration is coming

WhatsApp is also working on integrations with Google Calendar and Outlook. Users will eventually be able to add WhatsApp call links directly to calendar invitations through a plugin, and people receiving those invitations will be able to join the meeting even if they do not have a WhatsApp account. WhatsApp expects that feature later this year.

Guest calls are rolling out on the latest versions of WhatsApp for Android and iOS. The rollout is gradual, so the option may not appear for everyone immediately, and WhatsApp has not given a date for full availability.

Why it matters in Pakistan

Pakistan has one of the world’s most WhatsApp-dependent communications cultures, where the app handles everything from family calls to business coordination. Guest calls remove a real friction point: reaching someone who has not installed the app, whether an overseas client, an elderly relative or a one-off contact.

The feature arrives alongside WhatsApp’s iPhone redesign, which replaced the Settings tab with a new “You” tab, showing how quickly Meta is reshaping the app’s interface this year.
