Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing at the training ground on Friday, the German champions said.
Kompany has been nursing a virus in recent days and was unable to take part in training at the Allianz Arena. He also did not fulfil his media obligations on Tuesday ahead of the Champions League game against Arsenal.
What happened
“On Friday, Vincent Kompany required medical attention after collapsing during a training session for Bayern’s reserve team,” the club said. “The head coach of the professional squad had been observing the second team’s session.”
“Kompany is currently undergoing a thorough examination in the hospital and will remain under medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage all training and match-related operations.”
The Bundesliga leaders, who drew 2-2 with Arsenal at home in midweek, are due to travel to Freiburg on Sunday.
An illness that would not lift
The signs had been building all week. Assistant coach Aaron Danks fronted the pre-match press conference ahead of the Arsenal game, with Kompany only returning to the touchline for the match on Wednesday. In that 2-2 draw, Harry Kane was the man of the match — setting up Alphonso Davies for a goal and converting a penalty — while Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka suffered a thigh injury.
Kompany’s absence now removes the head coach from a crucial stretch. Bayern sit top of the Bundesliga, and Sunday’s trip to Freiburg is the kind of fixture where dropped points are punished mercilessly in a title race.
Club rallies round
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority,” said Max Eberl, Bayern’s Board Member for Sport. “At Bayern, we will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery.”
“Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and he will be given as much time as he needs. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes Vinnie a quick recovery.”
The Belgian, a former Manchester City captain, is in his second season in charge at Bayern. His coaching staff will take charge of preparations for Freiburg while he remains under observation.
A title race that waits for no one
The timing could hardly be worse for Bayern. As Bundesliga leaders, every match is an opportunity for their rivals to close the gap, and Freiburg away is exactly the kind of fixture where a distracted, leaderless side can slip. Kompany’s assistant will have to steady a squad that trained this week without its head coach fully present.
Kompany took over at Bayern after a playing career that made him one of the most respected defenders of his generation — a four-time Premier League winner as Manchester City’s captain. His move into management via Burnley and then Bayern was seen as one of the boldest appointments in recent European football, and he has so far repaid that faith by keeping Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga.
For now, though, football takes a back seat. The club’s message was unambiguous: his health comes first, and he will return only when the medical team clears him.
What is certain is that Bayern’s next press conferences will be watched for any update on their manager’s condition. A viral illness that ends in a collapse at the training ground is a reminder that even elite athletes and coaches are not immune to the body’s limits — and that football’s relentless calendar shows no mercy.
