The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday announced uncapped Kumar Kushagra as a cover for injured wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan for the second T20I of the five-match away series against New Zealand.

Kishan sustained a low-grade right adductor strain during India’s T20I series opener against New Zealand in Christchurch, and will not be available for the subsequent fixture, scheduled to be played at the same venue on Saturday.

A blow after a record chase

The injury comes just a day after India pulled off their highest successful T20I run chase to win the series opener at the Hagley Oval. Chasing 226, India won by four wickets in 19.4 overs, with Sanju Samson smashing 67 off 33 balls and Naman Dhir contributing an unbeaten 42.

Kishan’s absence removes one of India’s designated wicketkeeper-batters from a squad that is already rotating its options. The 26-year-old has been a fixture in India’s white-ball plans, and losing him for the Christchurch return match hands New Zealand a small opening after a bruising defeat.

The cover: Kumar Kushagra

In Kishan’s absence, India’s selection committee brought in uncapped wicketkeeper batter Kumar Kushagra as cover. Notably, the 22-year-old was already in Christchurch as he was set to represent India A in three red-ball matches from October 24 to November 10, and thus will join the senior men’s team in time for the second T20I.

“Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan sustained a low-grade right adductor strain during the first T20I against New Zealand and is ruled out of the second T20I to be played on Saturday,” the BCCI said in a statement.

“The Men’s Selection Committee has added Kumar Kushagra to the squad as cover for the second T20I. Kushagra, who is currently in Christchurch with the India A squad, will join the India squad for the second T20I. The BCCI Medical Team continues to monitor Kishan’s progress.”

India’s updated squad

Shreyas Iyer (c), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Tilak Varma (vc), Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav and Kumar Kushagra (wk).

India lead the five-match series 1-0 and will look to extend their advantage on Saturday, while New Zealand — whose 225 for 4 proved insufficient in the opener — will be desperate to level the contest on home turf.

Who is Kumar Kushagra?

Kushagra’s call-up is a case of being in the right place at the right time. The 22-year-old wicketkeeper-batter was already in Christchurch with the India A squad, which begins three red-ball matches on October 24, running to November 10. That proximity made him the logical emergency cover, sparing the selectors a long-haul replacement flight.

For Kushagra, it is a first taste of the senior dressing room — even as a standby. India’s wicketkeeping stocks are deep, with Samson already holding the gloves in the XI, but injuries have a way of opening doors, and a series on the road is where fringe players make their first impressions.

A strain to watch

A low-grade adductor strain is not a long-term concern, but groin injuries have a habit of recurring if rushed. The BCCI medical team’s decision to rule Kishan out of the second T20I rather than risk him suggests caution — with three more matches still to play in the series after Saturday, India would rather have their keeper-batter fully fit for the back end of the tour than gamble on an early return.
