Every PSL season comes down to a simple question: how do teams earn points, and what happens when they finish level? The answers — two points for a win, net run rate as the tiebreaker — decide which four teams reach the playoffs.
This guide explains the PSL points system with real examples from the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
Quick answer: In the PSL, teams get 2 points for a win, 1 point each for a tie or no-result, and 0 for a loss. Teams level on points are ranked by net run rate (NRR). The top four qualify for the playoffs.
The PSL points system
The system is the same one used across T20 leagues worldwide:
- Win: 2 points
- Tie or no-result (washout): 1 point each
- Loss: 0 points
With each team playing 10 group matches (in both the six-team and eight-team formats), the maximum is 20 points — though in practice, 12 to 14 usually guarantees a playoff spot, and 10 is often the cut-off line.
Net run rate: the tiebreaker that matters
Net run rate (NRR) measures how convincingly a team wins and loses: (runs scored / overs faced) minus (runs conceded / overs bowled), across the whole group stage. Big wins push it up; heavy defeats drag it down.
NRR is the first tiebreaker when teams finish level on points — ahead of head-to-head results. That makes margin of victory strategically important: a team that wins small and loses big can finish below a team with the same points but better NRR.
Who qualifies for the playoffs
The top four teams on the final table reach the playoffs, which follow this order:
- Qualifier: 1st vs 2nd — winner goes straight to the final
- Eliminator 1: 3rd vs 4th — loser is out
- Eliminator 2: Qualifier loser vs Eliminator 1 winner — winner reaches the final
- Final: the last two standing
Finishing first or second therefore buys a priceless second chance: even losing the Qualifier, a team gets another shot in Eliminator 2.
Real examples: when points and NRR decided seasons
PSL 2026: Hyderabad Kingsmen, Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings all finished on 10 points. NRR sent the Kingsmen (-0.361) through in fourth, eliminating defending champions Lahore (-0.482) and Karachi (-0.869) — the finest of margins deciding a playoff spot.
PSL 2025: Islamabad United and Karachi Kings both finished on 12 points; United’s +0.372 NRR put them second ahead of Karachi’s +0.049 — the difference between facing the table-toppers or the fourth-placed team in the playoffs.
PSL 2025 final race: Lahore Qalandars squeezed into fourth with 11 points and a +1.036 NRR — then won three straight knockout games to lift the trophy. In the PSL, fourth place is all you need.
