LAHORE: The Punjab School Education Department has announced a new weekly plan for schools across the province. The decision came through an official notification issued on April 1, 2026.
Under the Punjab schools new schedule, all schools will remain closed on Fridays until further notice. Saturday and Sunday will stay as regular weekly holidays. This means schools will now operate only four days a week.
Schools will open from Monday to Thursday. The department has also set new daily timings. Single-shift schools will run from 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM. Double-shift schools will follow two timings. Morning classes will take place from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Afternoon classes will start at 1:00 PM and end at 5:30 PM.
Officials from the Punjab School Education Department said the change aims to improve school management. They believe this plan will help teachers and students focus better during school hours. They also expect better use of resources.
District Education Authorities have received strict instructions. All Chief Executive Officers must ensure full implementation of the Punjab schools new schedule. The department has asked for immediate compliance in all districts.
Punjab Education Minister, Rana Sikandar Hayat, confirmed the decision on X. He said the government made this plan after careful review. He added that the new system will support better learning conditions.
Parents and teachers have shared mixed reactions. Some parents welcome the extra day off. They say it gives children more rest. Others worry about shorter study time during the week.
Education experts are also divided. Some believe fewer school days can improve focus. Others think it may affect syllabus completion. They stress the need for proper planning.
The Punjab School Education Department has enforced this schedule immediately. It will remain in place until new orders are issued.
The Punjab schools new schedule is now in effect. Its impact on students and schools will become clear in the coming weeks.
