Washington: The United States and Iran have agreed to stop fresh attacks against each other after renewed tensions threatened the fragile US-Iran ceasefire.
Axios reported that senior US officials confirmed the decision after both sides exchanged strikes despite an earlier understanding to avoid further military action.
The two countries now plan to hold talks in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday.
Officials will focus on the Strait of Hormuz, where disagreements over commercial shipping and naval coordination pushed both sides closer to another major confrontation.
The latest understanding comes only 11 days after the two countries announced a ceasefire.
However, the US-Iran ceasefire soon faced pressure as both Washington and Tehran accused each other of violating earlier commitments.
The situation became more serious after President Donald Trump warned that the United States could resume military action and complete its objectives.
Meanwhile, Iranian officials raised concerns about security arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz.
The waterway remains one of the world’s most important shipping routes because a large share of global oil and gas supplies passes through it.
Any disruption in the strait can affect international energy markets, shipping costs, and regional trade.
According to US officials, both sides have now agreed to pause military operations and prevent further escalation.
They expect commercial vessels to continue moving through the Strait of Hormuz without facing immediate military threats.
At the same time, technical teams from both countries will continue discussions to address operational issues.
The renewed dispute began after Washington and Tehran interpreted sections of their earlier memorandum of understanding differently.
The agreement included provisions about the safe movement of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran had agreed to support a secure passage for vessels using the route.
In return, the United States agreed to end restrictions on Iranian ports.
However, the two sides later disagreed on how ships should communicate before entering the waterway.
Iran reportedly wanted vessels to make prior contact before crossing the Strait.
US officials viewed that demand as inconsistent with the earlier understanding about free navigation.
As a result, tensions rose again, creating fresh uncertainty around the US-Iran ceasefire.
Last week, American and Iranian representatives held talks in Switzerland to reduce tensions and prevent a wider conflict.
Vice President JD Vance led the US delegation during those discussions.
Both sides also discussed a direct hotline between the US military and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The hotline would help military officials share information and avoid misunderstandings in the Strait of Hormuz.
However, the two sides had not activated the communication channel by Saturday.
That delay added pressure to an already sensitive situation.
Officials now hope that the Doha meeting can settle the disagreements and restore confidence between the two sides.
The talks were first expected to take place in Switzerland and focus on Iran’s nuclear program.
However, rising tensions shifted the meeting to Qatar and placed the Strait of Hormuz at the center of discussions.
Nick Stewart, who leads the US technical team, will also join the meeting.
Diplomatic sources believe the Doha talks could play an important role in protecting the US-Iran ceasefire.
They say both sides need a clear system for maritime communication, commercial shipping, and military coordination.
Without such an arrangement, even a small incident in the Strait of Hormuz could trigger another serious crisis.
For now, both countries appear ready to avoid further attacks.
However, the success of the new understanding will depend on what Washington and Tehran decide during their upcoming talks in Doha.
