Sutherland stars as Australia thrash Bangladesh in ODI opener
Australia opened the Australia Bangladesh women ODI series with a crushing seven-wicket win at Allan Border Field in Brisbane on Friday, chasing down 167 with more than 24 overs to spare.
Annabel Sutherland was the architect of the victory. She claimed four wickets for 30 runs to bowl Bangladesh out for 166, then returned to hit an unbeaten 25 off 23 balls and finish the job with the bat. Her all-round display earned her the player-of-the-match award.
Phoebe Litchfield provided the fireworks in the chase, smashing 77 off 57 balls as Australia reached 168 for three in just 25.4 overs.
Australia Bangladesh women ODI: Schutt reaches 150 wickets
The tone was set from the very first ball. Megan Schutt struck immediately, removing the opener with a delivery that jagged back to take the edge, and the veteran seamer never looked back.
Her second wicket, in the third over, was her 150th in ODI cricket. Schutt became only the third Australian to reach the mark, joining Ellyse Perry (166 wickets) and Cathryn Fitzpatrick (180), and the 12th player overall. India’s Jhulan Goswami leads the all-time list with 255.
Schutt finished with two for 19 from 10 overs, while Sutherland’s 4-30 did the most damage. Ashleigh Gardner, Georgia Wareham and captain Tahlia McGrath took a wicket each as Bangladesh, playing their first-ever ODI on Australian soil, were dismissed in 49.4 overs.
Bangladesh’s batters fail to convert
Several Bangladesh batters made starts but none built the innings the total demanded. Ritu Moni top-scored with 45 off 63 balls from number seven, while captain Nigar Sultana made a laboured 29 off 86 deliveries. Shorna Akter added 21 and Sharmin Akhter 24, but partnerships never developed against a disciplined attack.
In reply, Litchfield took the game away in a hurry. Her 89-run stand with Perry for the second wicket broke the back of the chase, and though 17-year-old debutant Habiba Islam claimed two wickets for Bangladesh, the result was never in doubt.
The teams meet again at the same venue on Sunday, with the third ODI to follow on Wednesday.
