Heavy Rain and Hail Batter K-P, Trip 83 Power Feeders Across Province

A sudden bout of heavy rain, hail and strong winds swept across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday, throwing daily life out of gear in Peshawar and several other districts. The K-P rain hailstorm left roads and low-lying areas under standing water and knocked out electricity in large parts of the province.

The Peshawar Electric Supply Company said 83 feeders tripped as the storm moved through its network. Nineteen feeders went down in Peshawar, 29 in Mardan, 13 each in Khyber and Swat, and nine in Swabi. Officials said power restoration had begun in areas where the rain stopped, with repair teams dispatched to the affected districts.

Authorities are still assessing the damage caused by the downpour and hail. The storm struck during the day, catching commuters off guard as rainwater accumulated on main roads and in low-lying neighbourhoods of the provincial capital.

Why the K-P rain hailstorm knocked out power

The feeder breakdown shows how widely the storm spread. Mardan recorded the highest number of tripped feeders at 29, followed by Peshawar with 19. Khyber and Swat reported 13 each, while Swabi reported nine.

PESCO said teams were working to restore supply in phases. Restoration began first in localities where the rain had eased, while crews moved into areas that were still waterlogged or difficult to reach.

More thunderstorms forecast

The bad weather may not be over. Forecasters expect more thunderstorms in the province in the coming days, raising the risk of further disruption to power supply and road traffic.

The latest spell follows a pattern of intense weather hitting the upper parts of the country this season. The National Disaster Management Authority had earlier warned of heavy rain and possible flash flooding across the upper regions, urging district administrations to stay alert.
