Pakistan’s Provinces at a Glance
Four provinces, two answers.
The Verdict
Which Is the Largest Province?
It depends what you measure.
By area: Balochistan — 347,190 km², about 44% of Pakistan’s land, larger than many countries. By population: Punjab — over half of Pakistanis live here. Biggest province of Pakistan usually means Balochistan (area); but in politics, “biggest” means Punjab — its 141 National Assembly seats decide elections. 2nd largest by area: Sindh (140,914 km²).
The Numbers

205,344 km²
Punjab: Area & Profile
The heartland.
The area of Punjab, Pakistan: 205,344 km² — the total area of Punjab makes it Pakistan’s second-largest province by area and largest by population (~127 million). Punjab province is the breadbasket (wheat, rice, cotton), the industrial core, and the political kingmaker — Maryam Nawaz is Chief Minister (2024–). Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan: its cities drive the national economy. “Punjab province Pakistan” searches usually want the basics — here they are.
The Giant
Balochistan: The Giant
44% of Pakistan, 6% of its people.
Is Balochistan part of Pakistan? Yes — its largest province, and the answer surprises many because of its distinct identity. Balochistan holds Gwadar (the CPEC port), vast mineral reserves (Reko Diq copper-gold), and Pakistan’s most complex security situation. Sparse, stunning, strategic — the province is Pakistan’s future frontier and its hardest governance challenge.
The numbers tell the story: 347,190 km² — bigger than Italy — holding some 15 million people, fewer than Lahore alone. Quetta, the capital, sits 1,680m up near the Afghan border. The province’s coastline stretches ~750km along the Arabian Sea. Gwadar’s deep-sea port is the crown jewel of CPEC; Reko Diq is among the world’s largest undeveloped copper-gold deposits; Sui’s gas has powered Pakistan for generations. Yet Balochistan’s human development indicators lag every other province — the grievance at the heart of its politics.
140,914 km²
Sindh: Second by Area
The Indus province.
Sindh — 140,914 km², capital Karachi — is Pakistan’s second-largest province by area and its economic engine. The Indus runs its length; Mohenjo-daro sits in its soil; the PPP has governed it since 2008 (Murad Ali Shah, CM). Thar’s coal, Karachi’s ports, Hyderabad’s industry — Sindh punches at its weight and above.
The Frontier
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Mountains and the merged districts.
KP (~101,741 km² with the merged tribal districts, capital Peshawar) is the smallest province by area but among the most newsworthy — PTI-governed (Sohail Afridi, CM), the frontline of counter-terrorism, and currently the subject of the federal government’s emergency/governor’s rule deliberations. The 2018 FATA merger redrew its map and its politics.
People
Largest by Population
Where Pakistanis live.
Which is the largest province of Pakistan by population? Punjab — over half the country (~127 million per the 2023 census). Then Sindh (~55M), KP (~40M with merged districts), Balochistan (~15M). This is why Punjab decides elections: 141 of 266 National Assembly general seats. Population, not area, is political power.
The Territories
Gilgit-Baltistan & Azad Kashmir
Not provinces — but part of Pakistan.
Gilgit-Baltistan (72,971 km²) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (13,297 km²) are administered territories, not provinces — though GB’s provincial-status debate never dies. Add Islamabad Capital Territory (906 km²). Together with the four provinces: 881,913 km².
The Map’s Story
How the Provinces Were Formed
The borders have a history.
At independence, Pakistan’s west was a patchwork: Punjab and Sindh as provinces, the NWFP, princely states (Bahawalpur, Khairpur, Kalat and others), and federally administered tribal areas. 1955: One Unit merged the west into a single province — deeply unpopular. 1970: One Unit dissolved; the four provinces took modern shape. 2010: the NWFP became Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. 2018: FATA merged into KP — the map’s most recent redraw. Balochistan’s own history: the princely state of Kalat’s accession in 1948 remains contested in Baloch nationalist memory.
Who Runs Them
Provincial Capitals & Governments
Four chief ministers.
| Province | Capital | Chief Minister (2026) | Party |
|---|---|---|---|
| Punjab | Lahore | Maryam Nawaz | PML-N |
| Sindh | Karachi | Murad Ali Shah | PPP |
| Khyber Pakhtunkhwa | Peshawar | Sohail Afridi | PTI |
| Balochistan | Quetta | — | Coalition |
The 18th Amendment (2010) devolved health, education and agriculture — provinces run daily life.
Livelihoods
What Each Province Produces
The economic map.
Punjab: wheat, rice, cotton, textiles, industry — the breadbasket and workshop. Sindh: ports, finance, Thar coal, agriculture — the trade gateway. KP: hydropower potential, minerals, tobacco, tourism (Swat, Naran) — the energy future. Balochistan: Gwadar, Reko Diq copper-gold, natural gas (Sui), livestock — the resource frontier. The NFC Award divides federal revenue among provinces — the money fight behind every budget.
Why It Matters
Why Province Size Matters
Area vs power.
Balochistan’s vastness is its paradox: the largest province with the smallest voice — 6% of the population, chronic underdevelopment, and a separatist insurgency fuelled by the sense that its resources serve others. Punjab’s dominance is the mirror: the biggest by population, it decides elections — breeding resentment in smaller provinces about “Punjabistan”. The federation’s central tension, in one map: area without people vs people without area. Every NFC Award, every census, every election replays it.
