Pakistan Travel Restrictions Update: October 2026

This page is the current rulebook: every travel restriction affecting Pakistan as of October 2026, in one place, with dates. No red list exists and no ban is in force — but advisories, restricted zones, visa rules, airspace closures and health requirements are all live instruments, and they change. Bookmark this page and check the official sources linked below before you travel.

Quick answer: October 2026 status: US Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” (updated 4 Mar 2026); UK advises against travel to KP, Balochistan and border belts; Pakistan–India airspace bans continue via monthly NOTAMs; e-visas take 7–10 working days (free Visa Prior to Arrival suspended since 1 Jan 2026); WHO polio travel rules extended late September 2026; NOC still required for sensitive border zones.

Advisory status: US and UK

United States — Level 3, unchanged since March. The State Department advisory of 4 March 2026 remains the current assessment: “Reconsider Travel” for Pakistan overall, “Do Not Travel” for Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including the former tribal districts, and the Line of Control vicinity. A late-September 2026 embassy alert about PTI protest marches advised avoiding gatherings — situational guidance, not a level change.

United Kingdom — regional warnings, border addition. The FCDO advises against all travel to KP, Balochistan, within 10 miles of the Afghanistan border, and (added during 2026) within 10km of the India–Pakistan border following the April escalation; against all but essential travel elsewhere. The Wagah–Attari crossing is closed. Compare both advisories side by side in the advisory comparison.

Airspace status

India–Pakistan bans continue. Pakistan’s NOTAM barring Indian-registered and Indian-operated aircraft from its airspace (first issued 24 April 2026) has been renewed month by month; India’s reciprocal ban on Pakistani aircraft stands likewise. Roughly 800 Indian flights a week are rerouted around Pakistan, with added time and fuel burn.

No other airspace restrictions affect Pakistan: international carriers overfly normally, and Pakistani airports operate standard schedules. If you are connecting via the Gulf to Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi, this dispute does not touch your routing. NOTAMs are published by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority — the news tracker notes each renewal.

Visa and entry status

E-visa processing: 7–10 working days. Since the 1 January 2026 suspension of the free Visa Prior to Arrival scheme, 126 nationalities apply through NADRA’s Pakistan Online Visa System. Applications are being processed normally; allow a month’s lead time and do not book non-refundable travel first. Gulf, Nepalese and Maldivian citizens remain visa-exempt for up to 90 days.

On the US side: the January 2026 immigrant-visa pause (75 countries including Pakistan) was ruled unlawful on 21 August 2026 and the government may appeal — but it never affected tourist, student or business visas, which continue to be issued. Full detail in the restrictions guide.

Health and zone status

Polio rules extended. The WHO’s late-September 2026 extension keeps the recommendation in force for another three months: travellers departing Pakistan should carry proof of polio vaccination, given continued wild poliovirus transmission in reservoirs including Karachi and southern KP. No COVID testing or quarantine applies.

Restricted zones unchanged. Foreigners still need an NOC for sensitive areas near the Afghan border, parts of the former tribal districts and the LoC belt. The mainstream tourist circuit — Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Hunza, Skardu, Naran — needs no special permission. The complete guide lists what each restriction means in practice.

Have Pakistan’s travel restrictions changed recently?

The standing picture is stable: US Level 3 since March 2026, UK regional warnings with 2026 border additions, monthly-renewed airspace bans since April 2026, and e-visa rules since January 2026. The September 2026 WHO polio extension is the most recent change.

Is the Wagah border open for travellers?

No. India closed the Wagah–Attari crossing during the April 2026 escalation and it remains shut. Overland travel between India and Pakistan is currently not possible for tourists.

How do I verify the current status before booking?

Check the FCDO Pakistan advice page (gov.uk) and the US State Department Pakistan page (travel.state.gov) for advisory dates, NADRA’s visa portal for entry rules, and PCAA NOTAMs for airspace. Re-check within a week of travel.
