PCB to Observe Breast Cancer Awareness Day During Pakistan-England ODI
Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore will turn pink on October 25 when Pakistan face England in the fourth one-day international of the tri-series, as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) observes Breast Cancer Awareness Day as part of its corporate social responsibility programme.
The tri-series also features Sri Lanka, giving the board an international platform for the campaign. The PCB breast cancer awareness day is being organised under Pinktober, the global breast cancer awareness drive held every October, and aims to highlight the importance of early detection, regular screening and timely treatment.
Pink kits, pink stumps and fan activities
The Pakistan men’s team will wear specially designed pink kits during the match as a mark of solidarity with breast cancer patients and survivors. England’s players, match officials and commentators will also be invited to wear pink ribbons in support of the cause.
The stumps will carry pink branding, while awareness messages and campaign visuals will appear on the stadium’s big screen and LED perimeter boards throughout the match. Commentators will share awareness messages during the live broadcast, reaching audiences in Pakistan and beyond.
Pink Ribbon activities at Gaddafi Stadium will begin two hours before the start of play. The PCB will also run digital and promotional activities in the build-up, with players featuring in special video messages and dedicated content on the board’s social media platforms. Limited-edition pink-themed merchandise, including travel polo shirts and fan shirts, will be sold through the official retail store and online platforms.
Why the PCB breast cancer awareness day matters in Pakistan
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in Pakistan, and health experts stress that early detection saves lives. Yet stigma and limited awareness mean many cases reach hospitals at an advanced stage. A campaign broadcast to millions of cricket viewers can carry the screening message into homes that health pamphlets never reach.
That is the real value of the PCB breast cancer awareness day. Cricket commands an audience no health campaign in Pakistan can buy, and the board is putting that reach behind early detection and timely treatment.
Free screening at Pink Ribbon hospital
The PCB has organised the Pink Day in partnership with the Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Trust Hospital in Lahore. As part of the initiative, free breast cancer screening will be available to fans at the hospital on October 24 and October 26.
Pink Ribbon Pakistan founder and honorary chief executive officer Omer Aftab said the partnership would extend awareness to a wider audience and encourage women to seek early diagnosis and treatment.
“Cricket has the power to unite Pakistan, and this partnership with the Pakistan Cricket Board gives us an extraordinary platform to turn that unity into action for women’s health,” he said.
“Through PINKtober, we aim to take breast cancer awareness to millions, encourage early detection and mobilise support for Pakistan’s first dedicated Breast Cancer Trust Hospital,” he said.
PCB officials back the campaign
PCB chief operating officer Sumair Ahmad Syed said the board recognised its responsibility to use cricket’s influence for social causes.
“Through this Pink Ribbon initiative, we want to use the platform of international cricket to raise awareness about breast cancer and highlight the importance of early detection and timely medical attention,” he said.
PCB director of commercial Ali Adnan Zaidi said the board wanted fans to take part in the campaign.
“We want our fans to be active participants in this campaign and help take the message of early detection and screening to their families and communities,” he said.
