Melania Trump Brokers Russia-Ukraine Oleshky Ceasefire from October 29

US First Lady Melania Trump has secured a localised Oleshky ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, the White House announced on Friday. The temporary truce begins on October 29 and will allow humanitarian aid to enter the Russian-held southern city while civilians prepare to evacuate through a designated safe passageway.

Both countries agreed to suspend all military action in Oleshky for the duration of the arrangement, according to the official statement. Non-military teams from both sides will then visit residents in their homes and coordinate transport for those who wish to leave.

“The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster,” Melania Trump said in the statement. “Oleshky’s remaining population is comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water.”

How the Oleshky ceasefire will work

Civilian leaders from both countries will work together to check on residents and assess the level of assistance each household needs, the statement said. Those who choose to evacuate will receive coordinated support and transport to their preferred destination.

“I anticipate some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine,” Melania Trump said. An unnamed American media organisation will accompany the teams on the ground to document the process. Reuters reported that the US outlet Newsmax said its cameras had been granted exclusive access to the effort.

The First Lady acted in what the White House described as her formal role as “Exclusive Intermediary”. She and her representative worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to fix the agreement’s objectives, timing and procedures. Neither government had publicly confirmed the arrangement at the time of the announcement.

The White House said Oleshky first came to her attention during a private discussion at her “Fostering the Future Together” event in New York during the 81st United Nations General Assembly. She built on a communication channel established through the earlier reunification of 34 Ukrainian children with their families.

A city worn down by occupation

Oleshky sits across the Dnipro River from Kherson and has been under Russian occupation since February 2022, when Moscow’s full-scale invasion began. Its remaining population of 1,700 to 2,000 is made up mostly of elderly residents, along with about 50 children, the White House said. Before the war, roughly 24,000 people lived there.

Those left behind face a deepening food crisis, limited electricity, mined roads and regular military attacks, according to the statement. “Without my intervention, the possibility to bring humanitarian aid into the city and to evacuate the elderly would be impossible,” Melania Trump said.

The dam that broke Oleshky

About 90 per cent of the city was flooded after the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam in June 2023, the White House said. An Associated Press investigation found that the explosion which destroyed the dam was likely caused by the Russian military.

The flooding killed hundreds of residents across the lower Dnipro and destroyed homes and infrastructure that were never rebuilt. It explains why Oleshky still lacks reliable electricity, heat and running water more than three years later, with another harsh winter approaching.

Diplomacy around the deal

The agreement arrives as President Donald Trump presses Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to strike a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war. It also comes weeks after Pope Leo urged Putin to back a ceasefire in Oleshky during a call from hospital, an appeal this agreement now follows.

The deal lands at a delicate moment in US diplomacy. Trump recently waived new sanctions on Russia even as relations with Kyiv slumped, and an earlier energy ceasefire was announced between Moscow and Kyiv days earlier, following Trump’s talks with Putin on ending the war.

On the ground, fighting has continued despite the diplomatic activity, with both sides trading strikes even as envoys met. Melania Trump has separately been active in efforts to return Ukrainian children seized by Russia to their families, as Dawn reported.
