Five senior Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leaders incarcerated in Kot Lakhpat Jail have warned that the party is at a historic crossroads and urged the incumbent leadership to show greater tolerance, unity and consensus.

In a joint open letter addressed to party chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, secretary-general Salman Akram Raja, MNAs, MPAs and members of the parliamentary party, political committee and core committee, the jailed leaders said remaining strong and organised was essential for the party’s own existence and for keeping alive the hopes of Pakistan’s young generation.

The letter, shared by their counsel Rana Mudassar Umar on Saturday, was signed by PTI vice-chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed and Ejaz Chaudhry.

“Do not react on rumours”

The jailed leaders referred to founding chairman Imran Khan’s three years of imprisonment and almost a year of solitary confinement, calling for greater forbearance, patience and collective wisdom.

Expressing solidarity with the current leadership, they advised against reacting on rumours and hearsay, urging leaders to sit together, understand issues through consultation and deliberation, and take decisions with maximum consensus.

They stressed that discussions held in different meetings should be treated as a trust and that leaders should refrain from airing personal opinions in the media. “Wait for the party policy to come and then express views in accordance with it,” they advised, adding, “This is not the time to resign or demand resignations.”

Qureshi’s release put on the agenda

Four of the senior leaders in jail also made a forceful demand to prioritise the release of vice-chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the party’s top policy agenda.

“Qureshi has been in jail for over three years. He has been acquitted in six cases and has secured bail in the rest, while bail pleas in two other identical cases have been pending for a long time due to non-decision,” they stated. “Dozens of hearings have been fixed, but the record is not even produced,” the statement said.

The letter lands in a long-running standoff. PTI says reconciliation is impossible without Imran Khan as talks collapsed, while PTI’s doors remain open to Fazl’s mediation offer, according to Junaid Akbar. Speaker Sadiq has called on Fazl as efforts to end the PTI deadlock continue, and the opposition has said it will hold no talks without consulting Imran Khan.

The families of detained leaders have also turned to the courts, with Imran Khan’s detained sisters’ families moving the Lahore High Court to seek meetings and medicines, alleging denial of access.

What the letter is really asking

Three asks run through the letter: unity, acting as one organisation rather than competing voices; process, deciding through consultation and keeping internal discussions confidential until policy is settled; and priorities, putting Qureshi’s release at the top of the policy agenda.

None names a rival faction or individual opponent. The criticism targets habits, reacting to rumours, airing views in the media, resigning or demanding resignations, rather than people. That framing lets the letter function as both advice and warning: the party’s crisis, in the authors’ view, is organisational as much as legal.

Whether the outside leadership takes the advice will show in the coming weeks, in how it handles talks, court dates and public statements. The jailed leaders have made their position clear from Kot Lakhpat.
