A sessions court in Lahore on Saturday denied post-arrest bail to a young man in a bank robbery case that police say was inspired by the PUBG online game.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Sarfraz Ahmad heard the bail petition of the suspect, Subhan Ali. South Cantonment police had registered the first information report on charges of robbing a bank in the Bhatta Chowk area of Rs700,000 after the suspect received a task while playing PUBG. Police said he went to his under-construction house after the robbery.

Police said they seized the allegedly looted money, a vehicle and the crime weapon from the suspect’s house.

Why bail was refused

In his order, the judge noted that the offence against the suspect falls within the prohibitory clause of Section 497 of the Criminal Procedure Code, and that prima facie sufficient incriminating material was available on record to connect the suspect with the commission of the offence.

Section 497 governs bail in non-bailable offences, and its prohibitory clause limits the court’s discretion where the material points to the accused’s involvement. The judge’s reasoning turned on that test: with the allegedly looted money, a vehicle and a weapon said to have been recovered from the suspect’s house, the record, in the court’s view, connected him to the offence at the bail stage.

The defence counsel had also argued that the suspect was mentally ill and suffering from a psychotic disorder. The judge rejected this plea, saying nothing was available on record to suggest that the suspect was declared mentally unsound or challenged by any competent forum. A medical claim, in other words, needs a record behind it before a bail court can act on it.

The PUBG angle, kept in proportion

The case has drawn attention because of the alleged PUBG link: police say the suspect received a task while playing the game. That detail comes from the police version in the first information report, not from a court finding. The court order turned on the recovery of material and the prohibitory clause, not on the game.

Lahore’s courts have handled a run of high-profile bail and hearing matters this year. The Lahore High Court has banned filming across court premises, while an anti-terrorism court judge warned of jailing officers after an investigating officer went missing in a bail hearing. In another bail case, Jagtar Singh Johal walked free from Tihar Jail after nine years when his legal position changed.

What happens next

The denial of post-arrest bail does not decide guilt. It means the suspect remains in custody while the case proceeds, and the defence can revisit bail if the record changes or at a later stage of trial. The prosecution case will now be tested on evidence, including the recovery claims that featured in the bail order.

For readers, the case is a reminder of how bail courts work. They do not try the offence. They ask whether the material connects the accused to it and whether the law permits release at that stage. In this case, the Lahore sessions court answered no on both counts.
