Pakistan Hockey League 2026 Launch Set for October 14 in Islamabad

The Pakistan Hockey Federation has fixed a date for the formal launch of the Pakistan Hockey League 2026. The federation will unveil the league in Islamabad on October 14. The PHF announced the plan in a press release on Wednesday, September 30.

The launch is the first firm step toward a franchise-based league for the national game. The inaugural season is scheduled for 2027. Six to eight franchise teams are expected to take part in the first edition.

What the Pakistan Hockey League 2026 plan includes

The PHF awarded the league’s commercial rights to Mediacast after a competitive bidding process earlier this year. “Now the PHF and Mediacast are set to launch the inaugural season of PHL in 2027. This league is being developed on the lines of FIH Hockey Pro League and Indian Hockey League and is likely to feature six to eight franchise teams in its first season,” the federation said in its release.

Leading foreign players will be contracted to play alongside Pakistani players. The arrangement will give national players a chance to share dressing rooms with international professionals. Pakistani coaches and support staff will also work with experienced foreign experts, which the PHF hopes will build skills across the national structure.

The league is built around a commercial model. “This league will also attract private sector partners in the form of franchise owners and corporate sponsors, thereby bringing much-needed commercial support and marketing for hockey throughout the country,” the federation said.

The PHF listed the revenue streams it expects. “A professionally managed league will create multiple new commercial opportunities through team ownership and partnerships, broadcasting and digital content, merchandising, advertising, hospitality, ticketing and grassroots programmes,” the release added.

A plan a decade in the making

The league has been on the drawing board for years. A revised model for the Pakistan Hockey League has been under consideration since 2016. Earlier proposals were shelved over permissions, scheduling and financial constraints.

The idea picked up pace in 2022. Local media reported that an office had been set up in Lahore and that former Pakistan Super League project director Salman Sarwar Butt had been hired as a consultant. The league still did not take off.

The PHF had earlier announced that the league would be staged in the first quarter of 2027. The October 14 launch now gives that plan a public starting point.

What the league aims to change

The federation says the broader goal is a modern and professional system for the national sport. Regular competitive opportunities, investment, performance science and youth development are listed as key targets.

“The challenge before us is to ensure that the sport’s rich history becomes the foundation of a modern and sustainable future, rather than merely a source of nostalgia,” the PHF said.

Pakistan has won Olympic gold medals and World Cups in hockey, but the national team has struggled in recent years. A franchise league follows the template of the Pakistan Super League, which changed the commercial face of cricket in the country.
