Zverev Ready for Djokovic Test in China Open Quarterfinal
Alexander Zverev will put his bid for the year-end world No. 1 ranking on the line against Novak Djokovic in the China Open quarterfinal in Beijing on Sunday, in the most anticipated match of the Asian swing so far.
The world No. 2 booked his place in the last eight with a 55-minute demolition of Chinese wildcard Shang Juncheng on Saturday, winning 6-0, 6-3 with nine aces. Djokovic reached the quarterfinal on Friday after rallying from a set down to beat home hope Bu Yunchaokete 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-2, a match in which the 39-year-old needed on-court medical treatment for an upper-body problem.
A 31-0 record on the line
Djokovic has never lost a match in Beijing. The Serb owns a perfect 31-0 record at the China Open and has won all six of his appearances at the tournament, lifting the title in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. He returned to the event this year for the first time in 11 years.
He leads the head-to-head against Zverev 9-5. Their last meeting came in the quarterfinals of the 2025 French Open, where Djokovic recovered from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Zverev’s most famous win in the rivalry came at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, when he ended Djokovic’s bid for the Golden Slam in the semifinals.
Zverev is under no illusions about the task. “I’ve got a very difficult opponent tomorrow, but I’m looking forward to those challenges as well,” he said after beating Shang. “This is one of his favourite courts, he’s never lost here. Of course, I am going to do everything I can to make it a challenge, compete, and hopefully be successful.”
The No. 1 race adds spice to the China Open quarterfinal
The quarterfinal carries weight beyond Beijing. Zverev, 29, has won more matches than anyone on the ATP Tour in 2026 with a 58-14 record, adding the Roland Garros and US Open titles to his name this season. He sits about 1,370 points behind world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who has withdrawn from next week’s Shanghai Masters with a knee injury.
If Zverev wins both Beijing and Shanghai, he would overtake the Italian and finish the year as world No. 1 for the first time, a goal he has made no secret of. “I think it’s no secret that it’s a goal, for sure,” he said this week. “I know what I’m playing for. I know I’m very, very motivated to play at the moment.”
The German is into his sixth Beijing quarterfinal, making him only the fourth man to reach that stage at least six times after Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and John Isner. He has also been near-unbeatable against left-handers, winning 48 of his last 49 matches against them, the third-best mark of the Open Era.
What happens next
The winner will face either Daniil Medvedev or Francisco Cerundolo in Monday’s semifinal. For Djokovic, a deep run would strengthen his bid to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin; for Zverev, anything less than the title keeps Sinner’s grip on the top ranking intact for now.
