Jeffrey Archer Dies at 86, a Day Before His Final Novel Hits Shelves

Jeffrey Archer, the bestselling British novelist and former politician, has died aged 86. His publisher HarperCollins announced on Monday that he died suddenly and peacefully at his London home, “between writing sessions”.

His death came just a day before the release of what he had said would be his final novel, *Adam and Eve*. The book, a historical novel set against the Second World War, was due to be published on Tuesday, October 6. No specific cause of death has been disclosed.

Jeffrey Archer: 300 million books and a five-decade career

Archer was one of the most commercially successful novelists of the past century. His books sold more than 300 million copies worldwide, and he remains the only author to have topped bestseller charts across fiction, short stories and non-fiction.

His 1979 novel *Kane and Abel*, the story of two men born on the same day locked in a lifelong rivalry, sold 34 million copies and remains one of the bestselling novels ever written. His 1976 debut, *Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less*, launched a writing career that spanned five decades and included *As the Crow Flies*, *Prisoner of Birth* and *The Clifton Chronicles*.

Kate Elton, HarperCollins’ UK chief executive and Archer’s editor, said: “We’re all devastated to have lost a writer who has brought joy to generations of readers, and a true friend.”

From Parliament to prison and back

Archer’s life was as dramatic as his fiction. Elected as the Conservative MP for Louth in Lincolnshire at just 29 in 1969, he rose to become deputy chairman of the party under Margaret Thatcher in the mid-1980s and was made a life peer, Lord Archer of Weston-super-Mare, in 1992.

His political career collapsed in 2001 when he was convicted of perjury and perverting the course of justice over lies told during a 1987 libel case against the Daily Star, in which he had won a then-record 500,000 pounds in damages. He was sentenced to four years in prison and served two, during which he wrote *A Prison Diary*.

He returned to the House of Lords after his release and retired in 2024. Only days before his death, he appeared on stage at a sold-out event in London to promote *Adam and Eve*, telling the audience he had decided the book would be his last.

A final novel, 50 years in the making

*Adam and Eve* follows two children born on Armistice Day in 1918, a shepherd’s son and an earl’s daughter, whose lives span a generation and intersect with the events of the Second World War. In July, Archer wrote that after 50 years of storytelling, the novel would be his final book, and his publishers had prepared a special collector’s edition to mark the occasion.

He is survived by his wife, scientist and academic Dame Mary Archer, their two sons William and James, and five grandchildren.

When did Jeffrey Archer die?

He died on Monday, October 5, 2026, at his home in London, according to his publisher HarperCollins. He was 86.
