Current Chief Ministers of Pakistan (2026): Punjab, Sindh, KP & Balochistan

Pakistan’s four provinces are each run by a chief minister — and as of October 2026, the roster spans all three major political forces: the PML-N in Punjab, the PPP in Sindh and Balochistan, and the PTI in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Here is the complete, up-to-date list with each CM’s party, term and political standing.

Quick answer: The current chief ministers of Pakistan are Maryam Nawaz (Punjab, PML-N, since 26 Feb 2024), Murad Ali Shah (Sindh, PPP, third term since 2024), Sohail Afridi (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, PTI, since Oct 2025) and Sarfraz Bugti (Balochistan, PPP, since Mar 2024).

Beyond the four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan’s chief minister is Amjad Hussain Azar (PPP, since July 2026), and Azad Jammu and Kashmir — which has a president and prime minister rather than a chief minister — is led by Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq.

Punjab: Maryam Nawaz

Maryam Nawaz’s election as Punjab’s chief minister was historic: the first woman to lead any Pakistani province. She took the oath on 26 February 2024 after the PML-N formed the provincial government following the February general election. As the daughter of Nawaz Sharif and niece of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, her appointment also marked a generational shift inside the Sharif political family.

She inherited the province her uncle had governed for over a decade — see Shehbaz Sharif’s Punjab record for the projects that set the bar. Her government has focused on school enrolment drives, a province-wide health card expansion and crackdowns on price hikes, while defending her administration against the PTI’s claim that the 2024 mandate was stolen.

Sindh: Murad Ali Shah

Murad Ali Shah is the longest-serving current chief minister, now in his third term at the helm of Sindh since 2016. An engineer with a Stanford background, the PPP leader has been Karachi’s de facto city-builder: the province’s development spending under him has centred on Karachi’s roads, water schemes and the BRT Green Line.

His third term began after the PPP swept Sindh in the 2024 provincial election. Unlike his counterparts in Punjab and KP, Shah has governed with an unbroken parliamentary majority — a stability no other current CM enjoys.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Sohail Afridi

Sohail Afridi became KP’s chief minister in October 2025, succeeding Ali Amin Gandapur of the PTI. His appointment made KP the only province governed by the opposition PTI — putting him on a collision course with the PML-N federal government in Islamabad.

The tension has been visible: Afridi has led PTI street movements into Punjab and clashed publicly with the Punjab chief minister, while the centre has warned of governor’s rule if the province’s assembly is used to destabilise the federation. KP’s CM office is, for now, the most politically combustible in the country.

Balochistan: Sarfraz Bugti

Sarfraz Bugti of the PPP took oath as Balochistan’s chief minister on 2 March 2024. A former interior minister in the caretaker setup, Bugti governs Pakistan’s largest province by area — and its most security-challenged. He has taken a hard line on militancy, ruling out negotiations with armed groups, while supporting conditional debate on new provinces on administrative grounds.

His position is the most coalition-dependent of the four: Balochistan’s fractured assembly means the PPP governs with allies, and Bugti has had to publicly deny rumours of a “two-and-a-half-year arrangement” rotating the office.
