Karachi University Events Rules Made Mandatory

Karachi University Events Rules Made Mandatory

Karachi University events rules have been tightened, with prior approval from the Vice Chancellor now mandatory for every programme and event on campus. The attendance of guests at such events will also need approval from the competent authority through the Registrar’s Office.

A formal notification has been issued by the University of Karachi Registrar. It informs all deans, directors and departmental heads that no academic programme or event can be held at the university, and no political or non-political guest can take part, without the Vice Chancellor’s prior approval.

Under the new rules, departments must submit applications for approval at least 15 days before the proposed programme date, complete with details and relevant documents on the prescribed proforma. Invitations to any minister, dignitary or other special guest will only be issued by the Registrar’s Office on behalf of the relevant department, and only after approval. Departments will not be able to issue invitations directly.

The notification states that any violation of these instructions will be taken seriously and may invite disciplinary action under the university’s relevant rules.

Karachi University events rules: what prompted the change

The move comes as a series of programmes have been held at the university before the semester break. A day earlier, MQM-Pakistan leader and Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal attended an event held by the Department of Computer Science.

Provincial Minister for Boards and Universities Ismail Rahu was also scheduled to attend the event’s concluding session. Earlier, a programme under the Department of Mass Communication was attended by social media influencers, former federal minister Asad Umar and television drama personalities.

The pattern appears to have pushed the administration to bring all campus events under one approval chain. Until now, departments could host guests and run programmes with far less central oversight. The new system puts the Registrar’s Office at the centre of every invitation.

What the rules mean for students and departments

For student societies and departments, the 15-day rule changes planning. Events will need to be fixed at least two weeks in advance, with paperwork filed on the prescribed form. Last-minute guest invitations will no longer be possible through departmental channels.

For guests, the change means every invitation carries the university’s formal approval. Ministers, dignitaries and public figures will be invited by the Registrar’s Office, not by individual departments. That gives the administration a clear record of who visited campus and under whose approval.

For the university, the rules offer tighter control over its public image. As one of Pakistan’s largest public universities, Karachi University hosts a constant stream of seminars, conferences and cultural events. A single approval point makes it easier to check the purpose, guests and timing of each one.

The test will be enforcement. The notification warns of disciplinary action, but the rules will only bite if departments follow the 15-day deadline and route invitations through the Registrar. The first events organised under the new system will show how strictly the chain is applied.

Feature Pakistan also covered the PMDC’s 60 per cent marks rule for MBBS and BDS admissions, the suspension of a BISE Hyderabad official over result manipulation, the warning over delays in Karachi development work and the passer-by killed during a robbery in Sohrab Goth.
