Meta Suspends Muse AI Chat Sharing After Privacy Flaw Exposed

Meta has suspended the conversation-sharing feature in Meta Muse AI after security researchers showed that public DNS records could expose thousands of shared chat links to anyone who knew where to look.

Researchers at the security firm Claroc found that Muse created shared conversation web addresses in a predictable format that included each chat’s title. Those addresses were also written into public domain name system records. That meant passive DNS searches, which trawl archived DNS activity, could surface shared conversations at scale.

One such search returned thousands of links and identified roughly 6,800 shared Muse conversations, Claroc said.

What the researchers found in shared chats

The exposed chats were not all trivial. Researchers who opened some of them found meeting details involving a major AI lab, a small-business loan application, a bank fraud alert containing partial account information, a company vacation calendar and internal business documents.

Claroc said it discovered the issue over the weekend. Ars Technica first reported the findings. Meta later confirmed to Benzinga that it had paused the sharing feature while it reviews the report.

Meta said its Muse bug bounty programme exists so researchers can flag problems and help improve the product. The company explained that sharing a Muse conversation generated a webpage anyone with the link could open. It has now paused that functionality while it studies Claroc’s findings and considers changes to how such links can be discovered.

After Meta’s update, Claroc said researchers could no longer open a sample of the previously available links. “We are glad to see it closed this quickly,” the firm said.

Not the first privacy question over Meta Muse AI

The episode follows an earlier privacy dispute around Meta Muse AI. In September, Inc. technology columnist Jason Aten alleged that Muse had accessed private messages on his Mac without him enabling the system’s “Full Disk Access” permission.

Meta spokesman Andy Stone rejected the claim, saying Muse can access Apple’s Messages app only when users explicitly opt in.

Why it matters for users in Pakistan

Pakistan has one of the world’s largest Meta user bases, with Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram woven into daily life and business. As Meta pushes Muse across its apps, the lesson for local users is simple: treat anything shared through an AI chat link as potentially public, and avoid pasting bank details, identity documents or business data into shared conversations.

The timing is awkward for Meta. The company reports third-quarter results after the market closes on Wednesday, with analysts expecting revenue of $63.36 billion against $51.24 billion a year earlier. Meta has beaten revenue estimates for more than ten straight quarters.

Tech analyst Dan Ives expects Meta to monetise its roughly 3.5 billion-user base through the Muse AI agent across Facebook and Instagram. Truist market strategist Shay Boloor estimates Muse could generate about $29 billion in revenue by 2030, including roughly $11 billion from subscriptions. Meta shares closed Tuesday at $694.25, down 1.59%, before edging up 0.11% to $695 in after-hours trading.

The AI business remains a high-stakes race. Feature Pakistan reported this week that Anthropic lost $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026, a reminder of the sums riding on these products. For Meta, keeping user trust may matter as much as the technology.
