Good News for Punjab Markets

The Punjab government has announced major relief for markets, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, and food outlets across the province.

According to an official notification issued by the Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD), businesses will remain exempted from the previously fixed market closing timings until June 1, 2026.

The notification was issued on May 15 under the Implementation and Coordination Wing of the Punjab government. The decision extends an earlier exemption that was already in place since April.

Under the latest order, shops and commercial centers can continue operating beyond the prescribed closure schedule. The relief applies to:

  • Markets
  • Shopping malls
  • Hotels
  • Restaurants
  • Food outlets
  • General shops

Officials said the decision aims to support business activity and provide convenience to both traders and customers. Commercial areas in major cities usually witness higher customer traffic during evening hours, especially on weekends.

The Punjab government has directed all divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners to ensure proper implementation of the notification in their respective districts.

Meanwhile, the Industries, Commerce and Investment Department has also been instructed to coordinate with chambers of commerce and business organizations for wider awareness of the decision.

Business owners have welcomed the extension because longer operating hours may help improve sales and customer flow. Restaurant owners and shopping malls are also expected to benefit from the relaxed timings.

The notification carries the approval of the Chief Secretary Punjab and has been circulated to all relevant departments for immediate action.
