Violence-Linked Deaths Surge 83pc in Q3 as Balochistan Becomes Epicentre

Pakistan recorded a sharp 83 per cent rise in violence-linked deaths during the third quarter of 2026, reversing the declining trend of the first two quarters as terrorism and counter-terrorism operations intensified across the country.

A new report by the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) puts the toll at 1,415 dead and 558 injured in 385 incidents over the July-September period. It calls the surge the highest escalation in violence since 2021.

Balochistan drives the surge in violence-linked deaths in Pakistan

The escalation was driven largely by Balochistan, where fatalities more than tripled and the province accounted for nearly 88 per cent of the national increase.

The southwestern province recorded 829 deaths, close to 59 per cent of the country’s total, overtaking Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as the worst-hit region for both deaths and incidents. Balochistan saw 186 violent incidents, more than 48 per cent of all cases recorded in the quarter. Fatalities there jumped 213 per cent from the previous quarter, rising from 265 in Q2 to 829 in Q3.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported 556 fatalities, over 39 per cent of the national toll, with 173 incidents, or nearly 45 per cent of the total. Deaths in KP rose by more than 17 per cent, from 475 to 556. The province suffered the highest number of injuries at 376, against 163 in Balochistan.

Together, the two provinces accounted for 98 per cent of all fatalities during the quarter.

Outlaws, civilians and security personnel

Outlaws made up the majority of the dead, with 921 fatalities, or more than 65 per cent of the total, after nearly 154 security operations. Their deaths more than doubled, rising 103 per cent from 453 in the second quarter.

The rise was not limited to militant casualties. Civilian deaths increased by nearly 36 per cent, from 187 to 254. Security personnel fatalities rose by more than 79 per cent, from 134 to 240. Combined, civilian and security personnel deaths climbed by nearly 54 per cent to 494.

Among groups claiming responsibility for attacks, the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan emerged as the deadliest in the quarter, with 13 claimed attacks causing 117 deaths and 65 injuries.

The Baloch Liberation Army claimed five attacks that killed 34 people and injured 42. The HGB-IUM claimed three attacks that caused 27 fatalities and 129 injuries, the highest injury toll among the listed groups.
