Zverev Survives Bublik Thriller to Reach Shanghai Quarter-Final
Alexander Zverev edged Alexander Bublik 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(1) in a third-set decider on Tuesday to reach the quarter-finals of the Rolex Shanghai Masters.
The German saved four set points in the first-set tiebreak, dropped the second amid more ankle trouble, then dominated the deciding tiebreak to close out the round-of-16 clash in two hours and 41 minutes.
First match as the assured No. 1
It was Zverev’s first match since being assured of the ATP year-end world No. 1 ranking — the prize he came to Shanghai chasing. Our earlier coverage noted that a semi-final berth would seal it for him; results elsewhere have now settled the race in his favour.
The 29-year-old has been the form player of the hard-court swing, with two majors in a standout 2026 season, and is chasing his first ATP Masters 1000 title since his Paris triumph in 2024.
Ankle worries again
The ankle that troubled him against Wu Yibing in the third round flared up again in the second set against Bublik, echoing the scare from his 6-4, 7-6(4) win over the Chinese wild card on Friday. He played through it and raised his level when it mattered in the final tiebreak.
“My ankle was acting up, unfortunately,” Zverev said afterwards. “It was kind of understandable because I have been playing a lot of tennis, which is kind of a good sign because I have been playing well. I am happy to get through. It was a difficult match because he has been playing amazing tennis.”
De Minaur next
Zverev now faces ninth seed Alex de Minaur in the quarter-final. De Minaur beat 26th seed Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 25 minutes to book his place.
It is Zverev’s first Shanghai quarter-final since 2019, and his 40th at an ATP Masters 1000 event — among active players, only Novak Djokovic, with 97, has reached more.
Zverev’s Shanghai run so far
The German’s path to the quarter-final has been anything but smooth. He opened with the straight-sets win over Wu Yibing, where the ankle scare first appeared, and needed three sets and two tiebreaks to get past Bublik.
A Shanghai title would be his first Masters 1000 crown since Paris 2024, and it would cap a season in which he has already won two majors and locked up the year-end No. 1 ranking. He is chasing his eighth Masters 1000 title overall — and his first in Shanghai.
