West Indies Bangladesh Second Test: Visitors Lead by 268

The West Indies Bangladesh second Test stayed with the visitors at the end of day two in Sylhet on Friday, despite Hasan Mahmud taking six wickets for 90 runs.

The visitors were bowled out for 356 in their first innings, then reduced Bangladesh to 88 for three at stumps. The hosts trail by 268 runs, with seven wickets in hand and three days left in the match.

Bangladesh are already 0-1 down in the series, so the position is a poor one. They also lost opener Shadman Islam to an ankle injury while fielding, which could leave them a batter short for the rest of the match.

West Indies Bangladesh second Test: Jangoo’s hundred sets up the visitors

West Indies resumed day two on 235 for four, with Amir Jangoo unbeaten on 111 and Justin Greaves on 35. The pair added steadily before Bangladesh took the second new ball, and Hasan then changed the shape of the innings.

Hasan found movement and bounce to dismiss Jangoo for 133 off 212 balls, ending an innings of more than five hours that included 13 fours and two sixes. He struck again off the next ball, when captain Roston Chase edged to wicketkeeper Litton Das, and suddenly he was on a hat-trick.

New batter Joshua Bishop survived the hat-trick ball after a review overturned an lbw decision, denying Hasan a second Test hat-trick. He had taken one against Afghanistan in the United Arab Emirates in October. Hasan later removed Bishop for 23, with Litton completing a stumping.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz bowled Greaves for 51 to reduce West Indies to 301 for eight. Shamar Joseph and Jomel Warrican then frustrated Bangladesh, taking the visitors to lunch at 322 for eight. Hasan broke their stand by dismissing Joseph for 16, and Warrican added 33 more with Jayden Seales before Miraz trapped Seales for 15 to end the innings, with Warrican unbeaten on 27.

Jangoo was the top scorer for West Indies. Debutant Kevin Wickham made 61, and Greaves added 51. Taskin Ahmed and Miraz took two wickets each in support of Hasan.

A record for Hasan Mahmud

Hasan’s six for 90 was his latest five-wicket haul in Tests, and it set a new record for a Bangladesh fast bowler. He moved past the mark he had previously shared with Shahadat Hossain, and the figures were also his best on home soil.

“Whenever we play in Sylhet, there is usually movement and overcast conditions, which tend to favour fast bowlers,” Hasan said after the day’s play. “But this wicket probably became quite flat after the first one or two hours and was good for batting.”

Hasan said Bangladesh were still hopeful. “If Mushfiqur and Hridoy can continue this partnership, I think we can reduce their lead. The wicket is still good, and if the batters can apply themselves, I think we can get the job done.”

Jangoo saw it differently. “Our objective was to get past 400, so we are probably disappointed,” he said. “Bangladesh bowled beautifully, and we knew the second new ball would be dangerous. But we will still be pleased with scoring more than 350 runs.”

Bangladesh’s reply falters

Bangladesh’s reply began badly. With Shadman injured, the hosts promoted lower-order batter Nayeem Hasan to open with Tanzid Hasan. Nayeem edged Jayden Seales for five, and Tanzid fell for 16 attempting to hit Greaves, leaving the hosts on 22 for two.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Towhid Hridoy tried to steady the innings, but Joseph broke their 29-run stand by removing Shanto for 18. At the close, Hridoy was unbeaten on 29 and Mushfiqur Rahim on 19, with 37 runs added for the fourth wicket.

Bangladesh need a long batting effort on day three to stay in the match. If Hridoy and Mushfiqur can bat through much of the first session, the hosts can start to eat into the deficit. If West Indies strike early, the series could be settled quickly.

Pakistan’s own Test build-up has taken a different shape. Sri Lanka beat the PCB Patrons XI by 142 runs in their warm-up match before the first Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi on Monday, November 9. Pakistan will also host Ireland for a one-day series in January 2027 after Zimbabwe withdrew from the planned tri-series, and Pakistan reached the Asian Games cricket final in October by beating Bangladesh.
