Karachi Woman Found Dead, Two Daughters Missing

A Karachi woman found dead in a water main near Dumba Goth had been missing with her two minor daughters for three days, officials said on Friday. Her two daughters, aged four years and one-and-a-half years, are still missing.

The body was found floating in the main line, which carries water from Keenjhar Lake. Malir Cantonment SHO Agha Abdul Rasheed said it appeared that the woman had drowned elsewhere and the strong flow of water had carried her body to the area. The body was entangled in a net installed in the water line.

The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities. The deceased was identified as Haseena, 30.

The search along the water main

The officer said it later emerged that a missing person’s report had been lodged at the Memon Goth police station, following which the investigation was handed over to Malir Cantonment police.

Memon Goth SHO Ayub Mirani said that three days ago, a man identified as Qadir Bux had visited the police station and reported that he and his wife had quarrelled over a domestic issue. During a heated argument, he had slapped his wife, after which she left their home in Memon Goth with their two minor daughters.

Police deployed lifeguards to search for the missing girls at various points along the water supply line, extending up to Gulshan-i-Iqbal, but the children could not be traced.

Karachi woman found dead: what police are checking next

The SHO said there was a farmhouse in the area off the Superhighway, and police were trying to obtain its CCTV footage to establish whether the woman had jumped into the water line along with her daughters or whether someone had thrown them into it.

He added that, on the complaint of the woman’s father, police had detained her husband, Qadir Bux, for interrogation. They were awaiting the doctors’ post-mortem examination report before proceeding further with the case.

The post-mortem report will be central to the investigation. It will establish the cause and timing of death, and help police decide whether the case is one of suicide, accident or foul play. Until it arrives, police have not fixed responsibility for the woman’s death.

The family lived in Memon Goth, a settlement on Karachi’s eastern fringe. Two brothers were shot dead after a dispute in Gulbai Chowrangi in an earlier Karachi case. Karachi University has opened a mental health centre, adding a new place for residents to seek help.

Second incident in Clifton

In a separate incident on Friday evening, a man who was reportedly suffering from financial problems shot and killed his minor son before taking his own life in Neelam Colony of Clifton, police and rescue services officials said.

The Boat Basin police said they received information at around 5pm regarding a firing incident. The police immediately reached the spot near Akbar Hotel in Neelam Colony. On arrival, the door of the house situated on the third floor was found locked. After breaking the door, the police found the body of a six-year-old boy. In another room, a man identified as Tanveer Ashraf was also found dead.

A 30-bore pistol was recovered from underneath his body. His wife, Shakila Naz, told the police that they had an argument over financial issues following which Tanveer allegedly shot and killed their son before taking his own life.
