The Project Freedom operation reportedly faced a major setback after Saudi Arabia refused to provide airspace access for the mission, according to a report published by an American newspaper.
The report claimed that former US President Donald Trump personally contacted Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in an attempt to convince him to support the mission. Despite those efforts, Saudi Arabia reportedly maintained its position and refused to allow the use of its airspace.
According to the newspaper, Saudi officials became upset because they did not receive timely information about the Project Freedom operation. Following this, Saudi authorities reportedly restricted access for American forces at a military base in Riyadh.
The report also stated that Saudi Arabia informed the United States that American aircraft could not operate from the Riyadh military base for the planned mission. This created operational difficulties because the US military needed the base to launch fighter aircraft and provide protection for naval assets involved in the Project Freedom operation.
Sources quoted in the report claimed that the US military had deployed fighter jets, refueling tankers, and air defense systems at the American base in Saudi Arabia. These military assets were considered important for supporting naval operations and securing American warships in the region.
The newspaper further claimed that the situation forced Trump to halt the operation in order to maintain continued American military access to the Saudi base. Without Saudi cooperation, the mission reportedly faced serious logistical and operational challenges.
The report highlights the importance of Saudi Arabia’s strategic position in regional military operations. It also shows how diplomatic disagreements between allies can directly affect defense planning and military coordination.
