Shehbaz Sharif Meets Trump at UNGA Reception Banquet in New York
NEW YORK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met United States President Donald Trump yesterday at a reception banquet held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session, in the latest Shehbaz Sharif Trump meeting this year.
Photographs released by the White House and shared by Pakistan’s Press Information Department show the two leaders smiling and shaking hands at the event, which brought together heads of state and government attending the 81st session of the General Assembly.
A warm exchange at the reception
The photographs capture a relaxed moment between Sharif and Trump on the margins of one of the busiest diplomatic weeks of the year. Both men are seen in good spirits as they greet each other at the banquet, a traditional gathering hosted for world leaders during the General Assembly.
Pakistani officials have long described the personal chemistry between the two leaders as an asset. The images of the handshake will be read in Islamabad as a signal that the recent warming in Pakistan-US relations has the direct backing of the American president.
Shehbaz Sharif Trump meeting caps a busy diplomatic week
The banquet meeting follows an unusually active stretch of Pakistan-US diplomacy. On September 25, Trump received Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir at the White House for talks that ran for more than 80 minutes, with US Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio also present.
During his address to the General Assembly the same day, Sharif praised Trump’s “resolute and visionary leadership” and credited the US president’s “timely intervention” with keeping the May 2025 Pakistan-India military confrontation from escalating into a wider war. Pakistan has said it will nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the ceasefire.
Trump has in turn described both Sharif and Munir as “great leaders” and has publicly backed away from his earlier tariff threats against countries trading with the region.
Why this matters for Pakistan
For Islamabad, repeated face time with Trump is the centrepiece of its current foreign policy. The White House meeting and now the banquet exchange give Pakistan visibility at the highest level of the US administration, something it lacked for years.
The engagement is already producing concrete results. A senior US State Department official has described Washington-Islamabad relations as “gradually warming”, pointing to new American interest in Pakistan’s mineral sector and in petroleum exploration.
Sharif also used his UNGA visit to press Pakistan’s case on the Indus Waters Treaty, raising India’s suspension of the treaty and citing a recent Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling that rejected India’s position. Several countries have assured Pakistan of support, according to Pakistani officials.
Did Shehbaz Sharif meet Trump at the UN?
Yes. The two leaders met at a reception banquet on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly session in New York on October 1, with the White House releasing photographs of them shaking hands.
What did the White House photographs show?
The photographs, shared by Pakistan’s Press Information Department, show Sharif and Trump smiling and shaking hands in a relaxed exchange at the banquet.
How many times have the two leaders met this year?
They have met several times since Trump’s return to office, including at the Board of Peace meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh, a formal White House meeting on September 25, and now the UNGA reception banquet.
Why is the meeting important for Pakistan?
Islamabad sees the relationship with Washington as central to its diplomacy, trade and security goals. The meetings give Pakistan direct access to the US president and support its push for investment, particularly in minerals and energy.
