Karachi–Europe Direct Shipping Restored as MSC Brings Back Weekly Service

Direct shipping between Karachi and Europe is back on schedule. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced on Thursday that restored Karachi Europe shipping connectivity would ease the burden on exporters who have been paying more and waiting longer since global routes came under strain.

The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has reinstated its Premium Ipak service following sustained demand from Pakistani exporters for a dedicated European link. Under the arrangement, MSC vessels will call weekly at Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited (KGTL), connecting Karachi with Europe through Colombo. The service covers Felixstowe, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Antwerp, Le Havre and London Gateway.

Weekly Karachi call restores Karachi Europe shipping link

For exporters, the announcement addresses one of the most pressing problems of the past two years. When the Red Sea crisis forced vessels around the Cape of Good Hope, transit times to Europe ballooned and freight rates climbed sharply. Textile exporters recently told the minister that longer voyages were inflating transport costs and delivery times for European and American markets, directly hurting Pakistan’s competitiveness.

“The restoration of a dedicated European service is an important development for our export-oriented industries, particularly the textile sector, which has been facing increased transit times and logistics costs because of disruptions to international shipping routes,” the minister said in a video message.

A weekly sailing gives exporters something they have lacked for months: predictability. Regular schedules let manufacturers plan production cycles, book cargo in advance and quote delivery dates to foreign buyers with more confidence. That matters especially in textiles, where buyers operate on tight seasonal calendars and penalties for late delivery are common.

Government pressure on shipping lines

Chaudhry said the government had been taking exporters’ concerns directly to shipping lines and other stakeholders. “Reliable and predictable shipping connectivity is essential for Pakistan’s exporters,” he said.

The maritime ministry has spent months pressing carriers to restore direct calls that were dropped or rerouted during the worst of the route disruptions, and the minister presented MSC’s decision as a vote of confidence in Pakistan’s export trade.

He was careful, however, to temper expectations. The reinstatement, he cautioned, should not be read as the end of the wider shipping crisis. Disruptions on international routes continue to unsettle global trade, and freight markets remain volatile. Exporters will still face choppier conditions than they did before the Red Sea situation began.

What happens next at Karachi ports

The minister credited Karachi Port Trust Chairman Rear Admiral (retd) Shahid Ahmed and the KGTL management for their part in bringing the service back. The KPT chairman said steps are under way to improve maritime logistics efficiency, a signal that the port authority intends to make the weekly call commercially attractive for the line over the long term.

Frequently asked questions

What shipping service has been restored?

MSC’s Premium Ipak service, which makes a weekly call at Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited and links Karachi with European ports including Felixstowe, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Antwerp, Le Havre and London Gateway via Colombo.

Why did exporters need a dedicated direct service?

Disruptions on international routes, particularly the Red Sea situation, forced ships onto longer voyages, raising transit times and freight costs. Exporters, especially in textiles, told the minister this was hurting their competitiveness in European and American markets.

Did the minister say the shipping crisis is over?

No. He cautioned that the reinstatement should not be seen as resolving the wider shipping-route crisis, noting that disruptions continue to affect global trade.

What has Karachi Port Trust said about logistics?

KPT Chairman Rear Admiral (retd) Shahid Ahmed said steps are under way to improve maritime logistics efficiency, supporting the weekly call and better cargo handling at the port.
