Sindh to Hold Investment Conference in Shanghai on October 15

The Sindh investment conference Shanghai plan, unveiled on Thursday by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, will court Chinese investors for both business-to-business and government-to-government deals at the October 15 event. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah will personally lead the high-level delegation travelling to China.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi, Memon said the provincial government wanted deeper Chinese engagement in Sindh’s economy. He argued that stronger investment flows from China could open up new opportunities and create jobs for the province’s young population. Development, he added, remained the Sindh government’s main priority.

Sindh investment conference Shanghai delegation seeks B2B and G2G deals

The minister framed the October 15 gathering as a platform for concrete agreements rather than ceremonial handshakes. B2B sessions will pair Chinese firms with local businesses, while G2G meetings are expected to line up cooperation between the two governments. Pakistan and China already share a long economic history through CPEC, and the province now wants a larger share of that partnership.

Thar coal described as a “game changer”

Memon also used the press conference to make the case for Thar coal as the backbone of Pakistan’s energy future. He described it as a “game changer” for the country, claiming it now accounts for 14 per cent of national electricity generation. Around one billion dollars has been invested in Thar coal projects so far, he said, a sum he presented as foreign exchange saved by using a local resource rather than imported fuel.

Schools under construction across the province

On the development front, Memon said 1,100 new schools are under construction across Sindh this year. Of these, 47 are expected to be completed by December, with 800 more finished before March.

The minister also announced the third edition of the Sindh Vision event, scheduled for Sukkur in November. Previous editions were held in Karachi and Islamabad. Journalists, diplomats and public figures will be invited, and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is expected to attend. Memon called Sukkur a “role model” district and said the event would showcase the government’s development work in the region.

Political remarks on PTI and militancy

The press conference was not only about investment. Memon said the PPP would not engage with the PTI in the coming elections, telling the opposition party to focus on its own mistakes. He also criticised the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister for targeting the PPP leadership, saying political point-scoring should not come at the cost of the province’s people.

On security, he called terrorism the biggest challenge facing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, claiming five of its seven divisions were affected by militancy. He accused the PTI of taking a soft line on the Taliban while in office and demanded the party clarify its policy on militancy.
