Aamir Sohail NCA visit: reviews player development work in Lahore
LAHORE: Former Pakistan Test captain Aamir Sohail made an NCA visit to the National Cricket Academy on Thursday to review its player development programmes and high-performance initiatives, urging the board to turn its investment in infrastructure into results on the field.
Sohail made the visit at the invitation of the Pakistan Cricket Board. He was briefed by Director High Performance Aqib Javed on the age-group pathways for under-15, under-17 and under-19 players and the academy’s structure for identifying and preparing young cricketers.
He also received a briefing on the Athlete Management System, which the academy uses to monitor player development, assess performances and identify areas for improvement.
Aamir Sohail NCA visit puts spotlight on new facilities
The former batter, who has previously served as director of the National Cricket Academy and as chief selector, reviewed the academy’s upgraded facilities, including an ongoing project to install a biomechanics laboratory.
Sohail praised the PCB’s investment in player development, telling PCB Digital that the facilities players need were now genuinely in place. “The facilities that should be available to players at the National Cricket Academy are now in place,” he said. “It is very encouraging to see that the prerequisites required for the development of players are now available in the true sense.”
He also commended the PCB chairman’s willingness to invest in the betterment of cricket, but stressed that the spending had to show up in performances. “With the chairman providing such encouragement and showing a willingness to invest in the betterment of cricket, it is equally important that this investment translates into performances and results,” he said.
Sohail called for greater expertise among the staff working with players, saying the new biomechanics laboratory could help cricketers identify technical shortcomings and lift their performances.
He welcomed the new player pathways but urged the board to keep a sustained focus on school and club cricket. The PCB’s recently launched school cricket tournament was a positive step, he said, but schools needed to stay engaged with the game throughout the year so young players got regular chances to play and progress.
Sohail represented Pakistan in 47 Tests and 156 one-day internationals between 1990 and 2000.
