Carlos Alcaraz suffered the biggest upset of this year’s Shanghai Masters on Monday, losing in straight sets to Belgium’s Zizou Bergs in the third round. The second seed went down 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted just over two hours.
Bergs, 27, is ranked 39th in the world. He held his nerve in a tense second-set tiebreak and closed out the win on his first match point. It was the biggest victory of his career.
Alcaraz, 23, had arrived in Shanghai in form. He won the Japan Open in Tokyo last Tuesday, a run we covered as Alcaraz battled past Munar to reach the Japan Open final. The Spaniard was chasing a ninth ATP Masters 1000 title, and his first in an injury-hit 2026 season.
How the match slipped away
Bergs struck first in the opening set. He broke for a 3-2 lead, but Alcaraz broke straight back. The set then turned in the 11th game, when a double fault handed Bergs a crucial break point.
Alcaraz could not recover from there. He lost the set after a volley fell short, and his frustration grew in the second set. He vented towards his corner after a series of wayward shots.
Bergs, by contrast, stayed calm. He failed to serve out the match at 6-5, so Alcaraz forced a tiebreak. The Belgian led 3-1, then saw Alcaraz level at 4-4. After that, Bergs won three points in a row to finish the job.
The numbers told the same story. Alcaraz won only 26 per cent of points on the Bergs first serve. He also hit 27 unforced errors against just 16 winners.
Afterwards, Bergs admitted the result had barely sunk in. “It’s a little bit of both. Disbelief and not feeling too much,” he said.
What the result means for the rankings
This defeat settles the race for the year-end world No. 1 ranking. Alcaraz can no longer catch Alexander Zverev at the top of the standings.
Jannik Sinner’s campaign has also ended early because of a knee problem, a development we reported in Sinner’s withdrawal from the Shanghai Masters. With both rivals out of the running, Zverev will finish 2026 as world No. 1.
The German earned that position across the summer. He won the French Open and the US Open, the first major titles of his career. His own Shanghai run has not been smooth, though, as Zverev survived an ankle scare to reach the third round earlier in the week.
For Alcaraz, the loss interrupts a comeback season. He spent months out with injury before returning to the tour. Tokyo suggested he was close to his best, but Shanghai showed how fine the margins still are.
Medvedev and Tsitsipas advance
Elsewhere on Monday, fifth seed Daniil Medvedev moved into the fourth round. He beat Czech qualifier Dalibor Svrcina 6-2, 6-3 in straight sets.
Stefanos Tsitsipas joined him after an upset of his own. The Greek came from a set down to beat 11th seed Taylor Fritz 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Medvedev and Tsitsipas will now meet in the next round.
Bergs, meanwhile, faces either Tommy Paul or defending champion Valentin Vacherot. The Shanghai draw has already lost Novak Djokovic, who fell to Hubert Hurkacz in the second round, as we reported in Hurkacz’s straight-sets win over Djokovic. Ben Shelton is also still in the draw after reaching the third round on his 24th birthday.
In the women’s game, there was one notable withdrawal on Monday. Zheng Qinwen pulled out of the Wuhan Open, citing fatigue and a right shoulder injury. She had won the China Open in Beijing only a day earlier.
