Aurangzeb departs for Bangkok
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb departed on Saturday for Bangkok, where he will lead Pakistan’s delegation at the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group. The IMF World Bank meetings 2026 run from October 12 to 18 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in the Thai capital.
In a statement, the finance ministry said Aurangzeb would head the Pakistani delegation at the week-long gathering of finance ministers, central bank governors and development officials from around the world. Local media reports suggest the finance minister has more than 60 meetings and engagements lined up on the sidelines of the event.
What the IMF World Bank meetings 2026 will cover
The annual meetings are the premier fixture on the global economic calendar. More than 15,000 participants from 191 countries are expected in Bangkok, including IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, World Bank President Ajay Banga, finance ministers and central bank chiefs, according to Reuters.
Thailand is hosting the event for the first time in 35 years. The theme for this year’s gathering is “Thailand’s New Horizons: Empowering People, Building Resilience”, with sessions expected to cover debt sustainability, climate finance, artificial intelligence and the strains on global trade.
Why the meetings matter for Pakistan
For Pakistan, the meetings are a key platform to present its reform story to lenders and investors. The finance minister is expected to brief Fund and Bank officials on macroeconomic stabilisation, tax reforms and efforts to widen the revenue base.
Pakistan’s engagement with the Fund includes a staff-level agreement for a $1.2 billion tranche, and keeping that relationship on track remains central to Islamabad’s economic diplomacy (read the full story). The finance ministry has also been working closely with the World Bank on the reform partnership, including a recent review with the Bank’s country director in Islamabad (World Bank, Pakistan review $20bn reform partnership).
A packed bilateral schedule
Beyond the plenary sessions, the annual meetings are prized for their sideline diplomacy. Finance ministers hold rapid-fire bilateral meetings with their counterparts, rating agencies and institutional investors, and these conversations shape perceptions of a country’s creditworthiness and reform credibility.
Aurangzeb’s delegation will also look to advance the government’s economic narrative of export-led growth and documentation of the economy. The prime minister has repeatedly tied Pakistan’s growth ambitions to deeper engagement with multilateral lenders (PM pushes export-led growth at PSX).
The World Bank has separately urged Pakistan to remove needless business rules to spur private investment, a message likely to feature in the delegation’s investor meetings in Bangkok (World Bank urges Pakistan to cut needless business rules). The finance ministry has meanwhile kept up its domestic reform push, including changes to the retailer tax scheme overseen by the finance minister (FBR retailer tax scheme to continue beyond 2026).
